‘LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD,’ SERIES THREE: LOVE LETTERS AND LOSS

The season plays up an off-screen romance, returns and a loss or two. Let’s look at Lark Rise to Candleford series three.

Lark Rise to Candleford, Series Three (2010) TV Series Review

The Timmins family has always lived a simple life, one that’s sometimes hard, but finds joy. When a smart and charming newspaper reporter arrives in their hamlet, it’s to tell Emma (Claudie Blakeley) that she may very well be a claimant to a large fortune. This could change their whole lives and while Emma appears excited, she begins to doubt this good fortune when it seems her husband Robert (Brendan Coyle) has plans to move to the posher Candleford.

Some in Candleford, like the wise postmistress Dorcas Lane (Julia Sawalha) doubt the motives of young Daniel Parrish (Ben Aldridge) as being genuine. She finds it further suspect when the eager reporter strikes up a possible romance with eldest daughter Laura Timmins (Olivia Hallinan) leaving Dorcas quite distrustful of this newcomer. With other challenges, including an unhappy child (Edward Darnell-Hayes) she loves more than life and a silly, incompetent maid (Ruby Bentall), Dorcas finds other things pulling at her time.

This series, like its prior seasons is sweet and charming, and like I also said before, a bit too sentimental. It has fabulous costumes and memorable characters. Though speaking of those characters, something I didn’t pick up on in my first watch, the guys aren’t presented as easy to like. This with the exception of one regular character, and one who arrives later. I still like almost all of them, but they aren’t written quite as straightforward or charming as the ladies.

There are some wonderful storylines like love letters and making a choice to stay in a relationship even when there are some bumps. I’m also one who doesn’t mind the disagreements between the married Timmins couple. I think they help in sorting out their differences and it’s also nice to see a couple who, yes fight, but also remain a couple. Minnie is also all kinds of cute and loveable. There’s also returns of two former characters, and the departure of one which leaves a great hole in the life of another.

While bittersweet and sentimental, Lark Rise to Candleford series three is also cute. Plus the cast is fabulous, even the guest stars, and it’s good fun to see so many familiar faces from favorite British productions.

Content: nothing much to note. There is an episode that deals with someone spreading rumors a man impregnats a girl. Things turn a bit ugly as a result with these rumors affecting other people and there’s an episode where someone suggests a couple might consider using something to prevent children. Nothing is really worth mentioning though as this is a period drama that isn’t a “bodice ripper,” as the term goes.
