PERIOD DRAMA YOU CAN FIND on AMAZON PRIME: SEPTEMBER 2024
In any given year, we normally share an annual list of titles you can find on Prime that fall into a costume drama tag. This year, we posted that in April, but thought we should feature another list featuring the period drama on Amazon Prime September 2024, because sometimes we just need a really pretty period drama to enjoy. I’m not sure we’ll find much additional or more titles to feature, but we’re poised and ready to dig into the search bar and see what we find.

PERIOD DRAMA on AMAZON PRIME SEPTEMBER 2024

A man engaged to a woman in 19th century New York has his head turned by the glamourous and “unconventional” cousin, the Countess Olenska, of his fiancée.
The film is PG

A woman used to drifting and moving place to place comes to a small village where the locals find her new business a threat to their moral code.
The film is PG-13
THE COUNT of MONTE CRISTO (1975)
One of the adaptations chronicling the life of Edmund Dantes, a man who is wrongly accused of a crime and so he reinvents himself.
The film is PG-13
CRUSOE (series)
Philip Winchester led this 13-episode adventure series about a man who survives being stranded on an island.
The series is TV-14
EMMA (1996)
The famous flick based on the Jane Austen novel features Jeremy Northam taking on the role of Mr. Knightley.
The film is PG
EMMA (1997)
Another adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, this version of Emma is delightful too and feels more “true” to the period with lighting and costumes. The story is about a woman who tries to matchmake everyone around her.
The film is PG.
EVIL UNDER THE SUN
An eighties adaptation of the Agatha Christie story, this follows Hercule Poirot as he tries to solve the murder of a renowned star.
The film is PG
FRENCHMAN’S CREEK
Inspired by a novel by Daphne du Maurier, this is also a remake and features Tara Fitzgerald as the wealthy heroine.
The film is TV-14
FROM TIME to TIME
A kind of fantasy story, this one features British talent like Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) and is, from what I remember good. Described as a haunting ghost story and going between two timelines.
The film is PG
JANE EYRE (1983, miniseries)
Timothy Dalton plays the iconic hero (or anti-hero for some viewers) Mr. Rochester in this miniseries.
The miniseries is TV-14
KING SOLOMAN’S MINES (2004 miniseries)
Patrick Swayze stars as an adventurer in this twenty year old miniseries.
The series is TV-14
A LITTLE PRINCESS (1987 miniseries)
A film I watched quite a lot as a kid, this is one I need to make time for while it resides on Amazon Prime. Even just for nostalgia’s sake. It is, of course, inspired by the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The film is PG
THE MAKING of a LADY
A mystery story about a woman who is companion to a wealthy widow. When she’s unceremoniously dismissed, she finds herself agreeing to a marriage of convenience from a most unusual source.
The film is PG-13

In spire of its rating, I think I did see this one years ago. It’s about a man who tries to obtain a “large sum” in order to woo the woman he loves, who happens to be a wealthy heiress. Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes and Lynn Collins are just three of the names you’ll see.
The film is R
MY LADY JANE (series)
An eight part series inspired by the novel (of the same name), My Lady Jane is an Amazon original (loosely) inspired by the life of Jane Grey, the nine day queen, though the series is very adult compared to the novel.
The series is TV-14 (but should be TV-MA)
NORTH and SOUTH (miniseries)
Inspired by the novel from Elizabeth Gaskell. This is a charming and wonderful period drama full of romanticism.
The series is TV-14
PASSION’S WAY
Inspired by a novel from Edith Wharton, this tells the story of reunited lovers who again find their possible rekindled love threatened when the truth of one of his past dalliances comes to light. Timothy Dalton, Sela Ward and Alicia Witt lead the cast.
The film is PG-13
PERSUASION (2008)
Based on the novel by Jane Austen, this story is about the famous story of reunited lovers.
The film is TV-14
THE REMAINS of the DAY
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson co-star in this film about a butler with an unflinching “steely” devotion to his master, and the “high-spirted” woman who challenges that.
The film is PG
THE SECRET GARDEN (1993)
Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this follows the “snooty” young Mary Lennox who goes to live with distant relatives and uncovers a world she never expects.
The film is G
A TALE of TWO CITIES (1980)
A story that hasn’t had a lot of adaptation treatment (at least not by the same standards as Jane Austen), this film follows the Charles Dickens saga set during revolutionary times.
The miniseries is PG-13
WHEN WE GO TO WAR (series)
This one, according to its synopsis, says it follows six characters full of “plans and dreams” just on the eve of the first World War.
The series is PG-13
