‘A NOVEL NOEL’: BOOKSTORE SETS STAGE FOR NEW ROMANCE
With a promising star and a cute premise, A Novel Noel is another Christmas romance you can enjoy.

Experiencing a challenging year means it’s time for Harper (Julie Gonzalo) to take a one month leave of absence. Her plan is to find her editing “spark” again and reinvent her passion for work. She plans to return home and discover some festiveness. At least this is her plan until she receives a notification that she has earned a temporary place working at a book shop for a month which comes with lodging. The idea of this work is ideal, but the owner, Sawyer (Brendan Penny) and her have a few different ideas on how to run the shop.

This is well… just another “copy and paste” title from Hallmark that’s sweet. The film has familiar faces and strangely also feels like Julie Gonzalo is setting into a new kind of persona here even though she’s still easily recognizable (I like some of her styling in this) from earlier roles. Everyone, as usual, will love seeing Brendan Penny from Chesapeake Shores again, too. There are some nice moments between Penny and Gonzalo, same is true of any Christmas movie.
There are the usual messages of finding what it is you want to do even though these characters are older and are several years into their respective careers. The game plan and idea of how this will end sets up early on so there’s really no “mystery” which means there’s no where for the story to go that you don’t easily already know. Plus there is also the usual and annoying breakup type drama. But it’s also handled better than some. Despite this minor annoyance, the literary additions and the quaint little bookstore is still cute. Plus it breaks the interrupted kiss rule, so points for this.
If you like seasonal movies that also bring in books and a love of reading then A Novel Noel is something you’ll very much enjoy.

Content: there is mention of a character who was in a same sex relationship (if this bothers you) but it’s really not worth mentioning. There is a mention of loss. But everything is very TV-G.
