SOME OF THE BOOKS WITH THE OLDEST PUBLICATION DATES ON MY SHELF

This is one of those lists that’s kind of embarrassing to write. This because we are supposed to share the oldest publication dates on the shelf. More specifically the books with the oldest publication date we haven’t read. Sharing such books is an embarrassment because, while I may not have bought them as soon as they published, they have been on my shelf for too long nonetheless.

SOME OF THE BOOKS WITH THE OLDEST PUBLICATION DATES ON MY SHELF. How many of these should I still read? Share on X

These aren’t the only long-ago publication date books I have, but it’s some of them. They also aren’t old considering how long books have been being published. Still, they’re older compared to some books I have on my shelf. So, let’s meet the contestants.

OLDEST PUBLICATION DATES on the SHELF

DESIGN on a CRIME, GINNY AIKEN (2005)

This series always did sound super fun, but I never read it. It sounds like material that would make a great Hallmark mystery plot. Goodreads

PERSUASION and PRIDE & PREJUDICE, JANE AUSTEN (1817, 1813)

The editions I have for these two were published in 2020 or around there, but still, originally they were published in the 1800s. I love the Pride and Prejudice movies, so reading the book should be something I do. But I think reading Emma or Persuasion is probably more likely for me to give a chance. WATERFALL, LISA T. BERGREN (2011)

I think this is a time travel novel that I saw lots of readers loving back in the day so it was a hype purchase buy. BUT at the same time, I did once love Lisa’s Grand Tour series! Goodreads

THE LITTLE LADY AGENCY, HESTER BROWNE (2005)

Picked this one up after loving The Runaway Princess. Goodreads

HEIST SOCIETY (2010) and I’D TELL YOU I LOVE YOU, BUT THEN I’D HAVE TO KILL YOU (2006), ALLY CARTER

Ally’s books always sound cute, but I haven’t read any… despite collecting a few here and there! ‘Heist’ on Goodreads •‘Love’ on Goodreads

A WEEKENED with MR. DARCY, VICTORIA CONNELLY (2010)

I’ve had this one on my shelf for a LONG time. It always sounded cute, but I never read it. It follows a heroine who decides to attend a Jane Austen Addicts conference. Goodreads

ENTWINED, HEATHER DIXON (2011)

This is a ‘Dancing Princesses’ fairytale retelling and while I was drawn in by the cover once upon a time. My order history says I bought this one in 2012. Goodreads

ELIXIR, HILARY DUFF (2010)

Pretty sure I bought this because it has Hilary Duff’s name on the title (I have so many favorite films with her). I think I even started reading it years ago but never finished. Still, oddly, I’d like to try again. Goodreads

AUSTENLAND, SHANNON HALE (2007)

I loved the movie based on this novel but didn’t read the book. Goodreads

JUST BETWEEN YOU and ME, JENNY B. JONES (2009)

I used to love Jenny’s novels so much, but never read this one. It survives unhauls because of those fond memories of the other novels by the author. Goodreads

TWENTIES GIRL, SOPHIE KINSELLA (2009)

I need to read a novel by Sophie. I loved the Shopaholic movie, but never read one of her books. Most of them do sound fun. Goodreads

SHADES of MILK and HONEY, MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL (2010)

A kind of magical historical novel, this one is said to have Jane Austen influences. Goodreads

ANNE of GREEN GABLES, L.M. MONTGOMERY (1908)

I purchased an edition of Anne of Green Gables from Sweet Sequels. I’m not sure I’ve actually read this story though. Which is a shame on me. This edition is of course a new publication because it’s a new edition, but its origins are from years ago of course so I’m going to roll with it.

FOR DARKNESS SHOWS the STARS, DIANA PETERFREUND (2012)

I’ve featured this one several times, but it fits this week’s topic so it’s re-feature. Plus, it’s a Persuasion (in space) retelling which is why I haven’t unhauled it yet. Goodreads

WHERE’D YOU GO BERNADETTE, MARIA SEMPLE (2011)

Bought a copy of this one because it was adapted. Never read the book. Never watched the film. Are either worth the time investment? Goodreads

A DISTANT MELODY, SARAH SUNDIN (2010)

I enjoy Sarah’s novels, so reading this series (someday) is something I should do. Goodreads

PIVOT POINT, KASIE WEST (2013)

Before she wrote cute romance novels, West wrote a sci-fi duology, and since I love her romance novels, that’s also why I haven’t unhauled this one. Goodreads

CONTROLLING INTEREST, ELIZABETH WHITE (2008)

I read a book or two by Elizabeth, but I don’t think this is one of them. Now she writes historical fiction as Beth White, and I’ve read now of those. Goodreads

    1. I meant to read ‘Bernadette’ a long time ago so that I could see the film then, but I didn’t ever read it. Now the question is, do I still read the book? Maybe I still will at some point!

      1. I read the book and then watched the movie a few days later. I have to say that I think the movie is pretty true to the book.

        1. That’s awesome! I like a movie to capture the same “feel” or atmosphere of a book even if there are some differences so it sounds like this one has great promise. :)

  1. Austen fans often rate Persuasion as their favourite of her novels. I relied on Goodreads for my list and I’m pretty sure there are books on my shelves that I haven’t added to my To-Read shelf that would otherwise appear on my list. A task for a rainy day, perhaps…

    1. That’s cool! I love the story as a film so reading the book is something I’d like to try. I haven’t been updating my GR pages or shelves for SO long now. I go in to add a review here and there, but compared to what I used to do I don’t keep anything up to date there. I’ve been putting all my time in here and that’s time consuming. :)

    1. I think so too, Lydia! I grew up loving the 80s Sullivan movies so reading the books should be high on my priority list. Maybe that should be a reader goal in 2025. :)

    1. I have a feeling if I read Elixir this would be me too. It’s not that I wouldn’t enjoy it, it’s just it seems like an entertaining read that may not stay long with the reader. Still I love those kinds of books! :)

        1. Sometimes even if you like an author ok, they just aren’t that cannot-wait-to-read-more favorite. And that’s OK, too! Makes me grateful there are SO many authors in the world. :)

    1. That’s awesome, Emily. I need to give them a chance. I love the Austen stories as films so reading another book (I read one, Sense and Sensibility) should be a 2025 reader goal. :)
