ALL THE DETAILS OF PBS’ ‘ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL,’ SEASON FIVE. #AllCreaturesPBS #PeriodDrama #British #Drama Share on XLOOKING back
Before we get into the returning faces and the story of this new (!) fifth season, if you haven’t watched this show yet, let me take this chance to encourage you to watch it.
The show is a remake of an older 70s drama about the same characters. This Masterpiece PBS adaptation, based on the books by main character James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) tells the story of James, a recent veterinary graduate eager to find a job vacancy. He finds one in a rural Yorkshire community farther from his home than he expects. Still, he accepts hoping to start his career. Once at Skeldale House, he begins to work with Siegfried Farnon, a kind of cranky man who finds anyone up for the vacancy quite unfit. Still, in time, this new team meshes, and we come to love these endearing characters and the stories they tell.
The show is cozy and lovely and so well produced, and I think it’s fair to say it’s one of the best shows to be produced in the last ten years. If you’ve liked things like The Durrells or Doc Martin, well, I think this one recommends itself. As the fifth season is about to drop, let’s learn some details about what’s to come.
Since we love to repeat discuss favorite things, our viewpoint is there is never too much conversation surrounding good stories. And All Creatures Great and Small certainly falls into the good story category. So, let’s jump right in and see what Masterpiece PBS has shared with us about the upcoming fifth season of this delightful 1940s period drama.
DETAILS about ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL SEASON FIVE
the CAST
Same as seasons prior to this, we’ll see many returning faces including the newcomer, Carmody, from season four. Additionally fan favorite Tristan will return to Skeldale House. Returning characters include Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West); Mrs. Audrey Hall (Anna Madeley); James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph); Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton); Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse); Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose); Mrs. Pumphrey (Patricia Hodge); Jenny Alderson (Imogen Clawson); and other favorites, too!
the CHARACTERS
In the press release, there is a Q&A with the lead actors about their characters and where they are in this fifth season. In a short, brief rundown, here’s what three of the main stars say about their characters.
Nicholas Ralph talks about James and his role with the RAF, saying that his return to Skeldale sees him assuming he can “be Super Vet, Super Dad, and juggle both roles seamlessly. But the reality is quite different.” For Siegfried (played by West), he’s “feeling a little bit stretched” where perhaps he didn’t before having come to rely on and have a routine with James and Tristan. Now he only has Carmody, a relative newcomer by comparison. We also know that Helen (Rachel Shenton) is a new mother, which I’m sure will inevitably factor in. Rachel says of her character in season five that “she’s sort of taken to it like a duck to water, and I don’t think she has time to do anything else.” Additionally, this season sounds as if it will show more of a bond and connection between Helen and Audrey as they rely on each other to keep the house running, even with their busy lives. details about all creatures great and small season five
