If you are curious as to what Sherlock and Daughter is about, well, I do have a first impression review (it was fun), but the gist is, Sherlock Holmes (played by, in this version, David Thewlis) has an American girl arrive on his doorstep claiming to be his daughter. Sherlock denies this, naturally, and so the battle of wills begins!

From sassy heroines to cases that bring curiosity to the lives of the investigators, there are some good stories and shows to discover in the same vein as Sherlock and Daughter.

10+ THINGS to WATCH if you like SHERLOCK and DAUGHTER

AN INSPECTOR CALLS, movie

From 2015, this is an interesting film that, if I remember right, doesn’t have a happy end. It’s about an inspector who, during a dinner party, reveals how he came to have a victim leading up to the whodunit among the guests. Appropriately, David Thewlis plays the inspector.

THE ARTFUL DODGER

This is a period retelling of Oliver Twist (or perhaps more of a “twist” on the story). It’s something I didn’t watch in full, but what I saw was interesting. It’s got a good cast, lots of sass and even though it’s full of updos, cravats and hoop skirts, it still has a kind of contemporary portrait that is done in order to inspire a modern audience.

THE DOCTOR BLAKE MYSTERIES

Post WWII, this follows a doctor who now runs his late father’s practice in his hometown. The show has Dr. Blake becoming a bit of a sleuth as he helps the police inspector solve the cases.

ELEMENTARY

This is modern, yes, but not adding this CBS dramedy feels like it would be a bit of an insult. The show is one of many that reimagine the Sherlock legend, this time with him being an addict who goes clean and Dr. Watson, after a terrible accident on the operating table, is hired to be Sherlock’s sober companion. Of course, the pair end up becoming friends in the deepest sense and this is reflected in superb acting.

ENOLA HOLMES, movies

This is a movie duo (with a third now promoted as being in production on social media) that is co-produced by Netflix. The films have Millie Bobby Brown as Enola, the young woman who is the baby sister of Sherlock Holmes. The films are great fun and entertaining and present a portrait of Holmes in a role where he shows some tenderness and respect for the cleverness Enola possesses. It’s all charm and a dang good time. The films also happen to be inspired by the novels by Nancy Springer.

FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES

on Youtube

Along with her business partner Trudy, Frankie Drake operates a detective agency where she relies on help from Flo (the coroner) and Mary Shaw, a woman determined to be taken as seriously as her any policeman. The series takes plan in the 1920s, but, from the little I know, isn’t often accurate to its era (with costumes and the like).

MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES

on Youtube

Sass rules this 1920s series which follows Miss Phryne Fisher as she forges her own path as a female detective. There is, of course, romance and a fabulous group of supporting characters, too.

MISS SCARLET

on Youtube

This show (fka Miss Scarlet and the Duke) is lots of fun, but it’s also one that I’ve struggled to fully love its heroine. In the final season under its former title, her childhood friend left for America because he couldn’t stay and be in what is mostly an unrequited love story with her. This change is good (no matter how much I’d like them to form a united and yes romantic partnership) not just for William (he deserves someone who wants to love him) and Eliza Scarlet continues in her bid to solve cases as she runs her late father’s detective agency.

THE MOONSTONE, miniseries

1934, 1972 and 1996 are all years that gave us a version of the Wilkie Collins novel. It’s the 2016, and most recent, however that I’m thinking of since it’s the only one I’ve seen. The story follows a woman whose diamond goes missing during a party and the various guests and family members who could have taken the priceless gem.

THE MYSTERY of a HANSOM CAB, movie

A film, this one is all about a love story that unravels when a woman comes to believe her love is actually a murderer.

MURDOCH MYSTERIES

A fun Canadian dramedy, this one is very Sherlockian, only it keeps things mostly light. It follows (I think its nearing its twentieth season) the clever detective William Murdoch who works alongside his boss, Brackenreid, alongside eager constables, George Crabtree and Henry Higgins. The show has lots of “real” people enter William’s life (everyone from L.M. Montgomery to Nikola Tesla) which is entertaining. It also feels like a really nice (albeit maybe funnier) match to include in this 10 things to watch if you like Sherlock and Daughter list.

THE PINKERTONS, 2014

on Youtube

A one-season (22 episodes) show, this is one I think I’ve seen one or two episodes for a long time ago. It’s about a father and son working with Kate, the first female Pinkerton operative! It’s set in more of a “wild west” kind of setting and I think takes place in and around Kansas City.

SHERLOCK, bbc series

From across the pond, this too is a modern interpretation of the legend and shows us who Sherlock might be if he had a little computer in his pocket! It’s darker than the American shows that contemporize Holmes, but it’s also cleverer, too. Its Prime Video page has 10,000+ ratings with 90%+ being a five star. (And, I will say, I think I’m the only person who enjoyed the final season; I seem to see quite a lot of despise for that season I guess I missed something.)

SHERLOCK HOLMES and SHERLOCK HOLMES: GAME of SHADOWS, movies

These movies from Guy Ritchie, are all kinds of entertaining fun. They probably aren’t canon for Holmes and Watson, but they do make for titles that make us laugh and get quite a lot of entertainment from. In this variation Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law play the famous detectives!

WATSON

Like its genre peers, this CBS drama is modern and is, largely, Sherlock-less. There is emotional fallout from him not being in the show, but based on what I know (all I saw was the first episode because medical dramas and I aren’t friends), this one chronicles the life of Dr. Watson in his life after Sherlock. It’s a reimagining and not a sequel to CBS’ earlier incarnation Elementary (which I’m glad for) but is from some of the same people who had a hand in that drama.
