THE ADAPTATIONS AND BIG-SCREEN MOVIES COMING TO THEATERS IN 2025

Like other of our publications here, we’re again indulging in another of our annual traditions which is to look at the big screen features coming to theaters in 2025. This is also a selective group of titles that we limit to films that fall into one of two categories. These categories are a: types of films (for example we don’t watch or see horror films) we tend to talk about or feature and b: titles that are inspired by a novel. So, with this all said, let’s dive into some of the 2025 movie adaptations and big-screen features coming to charm us in this coming new year.

THE ADAPTATIONS AND BIG-SCREEN MOVIES COMING TO THEATERS IN 2025. Which movies are you planning to see? #SnowWhite #WishYouWereHere #FreakierFriday Share on X

I’m not going to lie, the film industry hasn’t enchanted me for a few years now. This doesn’t mean I don’t still find movies I love, but rather that there are fewer I truly like or am interested in (or perhaps it’s because I also know what I like). I’m less (and less) inclined to go to the theater to see something because, well, frankly there’s been nothing that has made me that excited for a while. In fact, if I told you the last film I saw in the theater you’d probably laugh. Regardless of this, from adrenaline thrills to sweet romance and fairy tales, the box office is setting up to (perhaps) have a good movie or two this year. (There is also likely adaptations coming to streaming services, but we’re going to try to keep with the big screen movies.) I know of at least one I would get out to see, but I’m still not sure I will. Let’s dive right in.

2025 MOVIE ADAPTATIONS and BIG SCREEN FEATURES

there may be more official dates or titles announced for 2025, so we’ll update here if we find more to feature that fit in with the content we write about.

WISH YOU WERE HERE – JANUARY 17

Based on the novel of the same name, this one is about taking the chance on “true romance” only to have this chance abruptly end. (Sounds sad, right?) It then follows the heroine, Charlotte as she “searches for answers and meaning.” The film will mark the directorial debut of Julia Stiles and will star Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, Jennifer Grey and Kelsey Grammer.

THE UNBREAKABLE BOY – FEBRUARY 21

Based on a novel, this one follows a boy and his family who has a rare “brittle-bone disease” and also autism. This is one of those films that was delayed in its distribution, too. Zachary Levi leads the cast.

DISNEY’S SNOW WHITE – MARCH 21

Plagued with controversy, Disney’s live action version of Snow White is finally going to be released in 2025. According to press, this one won’t be about anyone being “rescued” by a prince, which is a small piece of why this film has had so much controversy, and also something I wrote about in a past Pop Culture roundup feature (including links to social media posts and reaction people had to this news).

THE AMATEUR – APRIL 11

Originally set to open in 2024, this is based on a novel and falls into the mystery/thriller genre. It follows a CIA employee who, after the death of his wife, decides to play the blackmail game.

FREAKIER FRIDAY – AUGUST 8

Following up their remake over ten years ago, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis (along with Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon) return in this sequel as Lohan’s Anna is now a mom and preparing to take on the role of stepmom, too. Do we think Murray is the ex or the fiancée? My guess is the former.

DOWNTON ABBEY 3 – SEPTEMBER 12

The majority of the primary cast will return in this third feature period drama which will also see Paul Giametti, who plays Cora’s brother, return to the cast of characters. As an avid fan of Downton Abbey, this is high on my 2025 movie list.

THE BRIDE! – SEPTEMBER 26

Maggie Gyllenhaal is directing this film which is a new take on the Bride of Frankenstein legend. It will feature Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.

REGRETTING YOU – OCTOBER 24

Another Colleen Hoover adaptation, this one will have Allison Williams and McKenna Grace playing mother and daughter.

THE HOUSEMAID – DECEMBER 25

Based on the novel of the same name, Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried star in a story about a woman who is hired by a wealthy couple only to uncover dangerous secrets while working for them.

FRANKENSTEIN – TBD

The second Frankenstein film to be remade in 2025 (if it ends up releasing this year!), this one is helmed by Guillermo del Toro, which means it may be a bit creepier than Gyllenhaal’s, this one will have Christoph Waltz, Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi and Mia Goth.
