SEVENTEEN HISTORICAL NOVELS TO ADD TO YOUR TBR
When it comes to novels set in another time, I’m definitely a “read my timeframe” kind of person. I’m not overly fond or futuristic or sci-fi novels, and oddly, I’ve never really taken to historical novels. The reason for the latter flummoxes me because I so enjoy period drama inspired by Jane Austen or Charles Dickens. Irrespective of this, I still have some historical novels on my shelf and since it means a chance to share some books perhaps I don’t normally, we’re going to spotlight historical novels to add to your TBR.
LIST | THE ‘ROYAL’ ROMCOMS WE LOVE FROM HALLMARK (HOW I GRADE THEM!)
SEVENTEEN HISTORICAL NOVELS TO ADD TO YOUR TBR. #HistoricalBooks #BookstoRead #TopTen #TopTenTuesday #BookList Share on XFinding them may be a tiny bit of a challenge because the goal is to find books I don’t feature much, but trying is most important and so that’s the goal we’re setting out to do which is to try to find some we rarely put the spotlight on. To be transparent, some of these may not still be on my shelf, because I’ve been unhauling books I just don’t see myself re-reading or books I’ve had for a ridiculous about of time but never read, but at some point, these did have space there. Let’s see what I find and which historical novels live on my shelf.
HISTORICAL NOVELS to add to your TBR
FROM a DISTANCE, TAMERA ALEXANDER
Pretty sure I actually read this series or at least two of them. At the time I think I liked them, and book one is all about a sassy photographer and a hero with a lot of things from his past that maybe haunt him. Goodreads
CHASING SHADOWS, LYNN AUSTIN
This one is about the life-changing event for three different women that is the arrival of Nazis to Netherlands. Goodreads
THE LADIES REWRITE the RULES, SUZANNE ALLAIN
I’ve had this one for a while and keep seeing some positive reviews for Suzanne’s books. Still haven’t cracked the spine on this one, but it seems like it would be a good novel about wealthy widow with no plans to remarry. When her name is published on a list of women looking to marry, she’s quite unprepared for how handsome the list owner is when she wages her war of words with him. Goodreads
THE BRITISH BOOKSELLERS, KRISTY CAMBRON
Oh, yes, here we have another book I haven’t read. I have read books by Kristy though. This one is about the son of a farmer whose friendship with the daughter of an earl has no business existing, and yet it does. The “Great War” changes everything not just between them, but also the world they live in. Goodreads

NADIA, SUSAN K. DOWNS
Set in the 1970s, this one is a story about intrigue and spies and the CIA! It’s also a book I read years ago, and would have likely bought at a store like Borders (because yes, I used to walk into a bookstore and excitedly would try to find the latest books I wanted). It was good if I’m remembering correctly. Goodreads
THE MISTRESS of TALL ACRE, LAURA FRANTZ
A marriage of convenience story about a widower and a small daughter, this is one I read years ago too (like many of these) and at the time, I quite liked it which makes me think I should read one of Laura’s more recent novels, too. Goodreads
A BRIDE in the BARGAIN and A BRIDE MOST BEGRUDGING, DEEANNE GIST
Apart from the stunning period wedding gowns on these covers, I’m really not sure what I thought of these. I just know I read books by Deeanne! ‘Bargain’ on Goodreads • ‘Begrudging’ on Goodreads
THE CODEBREAKER’S DAUGHTER, AMY LYNN GREEN
Technically not on my bookshelf yet (because it’s not published as of yet), Amy’s books sound so good! But I haven’t read any as of yet. Hoping I remedy that with one of her releases. Goodreads
LOVE on a DIME, CARA LYNN JAMES
Set in the late 1800s, this one follows “ladies of leisure” in Newport Rhode Island and the “opulent mansions” where they reside over summer months. One of these ladies’ pens novels despite this being a possible stain on her reputation should society (or the man courting her!) learn her secret. Goodreads

LADY of MILKWEED MANOR and THE TUTOR’S DAUGHTER, JULIE KLASSEN
An author I used to buy many books buy. Some I read, and some I unhauled without reading. It’s been a long time since I bought anything new by her. ‘Manor’ on Goodreads • ‘Tutor’ on Goodreads
GARDEN of the MIDNIGHTS, HANNAH LINDER
This one had a stunning cover which is why I bought it. It’s not one I’ve read (no one is surprised, right), but it does seem like it’ll be a unique story about secrets that “unfold into scandal” following characters William and Isabella, the girl who’s friendship means everything to him. Goodreads
THE BERLIN LETTERS and THE LONDON HOUSE, KATHERINE REAY
I haven’t read either of these (and Reay has another novel coming in May that sounds unique, too!), but I did read several of her contemporary novels and really did like them. This means now I need to read some of her more recent stuff because I am sure they’re delightful. One is set in the 80s, and the other the 30s/40s. ‘Berlin’ on Goodreads | ‘London’ on Goodreads
HEIRESS, SUSAN MAY WARREN
I read this entire trio “back in the day” and am still baffled by the memories I have of liking it. Reason being it’s a very bittersweet series that has lots of sad things happen to the characters. It feels find of like a Downton Abbey type saga before the show was ever a thing. Goodreads
HEAD in the CLOUDS, KAREN WITEMEYER
Apart from its darling yellow colored cover, I don’t remember this one and I don’t think I ever read it. It certainly looks as though it’d be a darling read though. Goodreads

Rissi,
You have a great list! So many I’ve read and enjoyed.
Have a great week my friend.
Thanks, Andi! Glad to know you recognize many. :)
So many great books on this list! I see a ton of my favorites as well as some I’d love to read yet. Thanks for sharing :)
Colletta
Fun! Hope you enjoy the ones you haven’t read yet. :) Thanks for visiting!
Good for you for unhauling books!
It’s a task that MUST be done! :)
For some reason I thought you were way more into historical novels. It’s cool you thought of some that fit this theme, though. I liked Jane Eyre.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
I used to read historical novels ALL the time. But not so much anymore. Every once in a while I’ll read one and some are new favorites, and others are fails. It’s odd to me that I don’t love the genre more because I love 95% of the British period drama films I watch. ;)
LOL, we basically did the same topic today. I also featured Heiress on my list (it’s on my shelves and I haven’t read it). I did like Deanna Gist’s books, they were funny. I also enjoyed Head in the Clouds, it was also funny. I have at least one book by Cara Lynn James on my shelf that I haven’t read. I have loved the ones I have read by Amy Lynn Green (I think all the published ones). Have a great week!
That’s fun! Great book minds and all that. ;) Still need to read Amy’s books and so many of the books I used to read included books by Deeanne or Karen’s, too. So many childhood favorites.
It’s hard because there is only so much time and we want to read ALL the books :)
So. True. I’ve also become (as an adult) someone who can only read for an hour (or so) at a time before I want to do something else. The exception to that is if I’m almost done with the book and now I *have* to know how it all ends! ;)
Thank you for introducing me to many new books!

Always fun to “meet” new books as possible TBR reads. :)
The Codebreaker’s Daughter does sound great! Thanks for putting it on my radar. :)
I think so too! I need to read Amy’s books yet but they sound good. :)
I’ve never been much for sci fi or futuristic reads either, but I’ve always loved historical fiction. I haven’t read any of the books on your list, surprisingly. Several of them are on my TBR list, so hopefully, I’ll get to them at some point.
Happy TTT!

Lots of (hopefully) good books for you to enjoy yet then! I hope they all end up being enjoyable. :) I don’t really read sci-fi books either but do enjoy a sci-fi movie or TV show now and then.
I quite enjoy historical fiction but I haven’t heard of any of the books you featured. Some of these look really good to me, more books to add to my tbr!
Fun! Hope you find some to enjoy. :)
I’m more likely to read a historical romance than to watch one. The British Booksellers sounds like a really good book. Heiress is a series that I’ll look into as well.
Doesn’t Kristy’s look good?? It’s been FOREVER since I read one of hers but that one jumped out immediately (probably the cover art initially and then it also sounded good too!). Hope you enjoy Heiress if you read it. I remember liking those way back when. :)
I don’t believe I am familiar with any of these, so thank you for the recs!
Always fun to possibly discover some new titles! :)
