‘FEDS’ IS AN 80S COMEDY THAT LIKLEY INSPIRED MORE THAN ONE FEMALE BUDDY MOVIES

A comedy flick from the late 80s, Feds entertains but isn’t really something that stays with me.

Feds (1988) Film Review

Despite the program being strict, Ellie DeWitt (Rebecca De Mornay) makes it into the FBI Training Academy. The course is a challenge and throws at her things she isn’t fully prepared for. She excels at the physical part and shows a natural aptitude for training. Where she fails is in the studying part. Fellow trainee Janis Zuckermann (Mary Gross) is the opposite of Ellie. The two don’t exactly get on, but then Ellie recognizes that they need each other.

Janis is book smart and finds the studying easy. It’s the physical part that trips her up, and so Ellie decides that to make it through they have to help each other, little realizing that they may end up being exactly what the other needs to make it to graduation.

This, like so many other films, feels like one that may have inspired buddy cop comedies or even films like Miss Congeniality. Just as I’m sure there is something that came before Feds that inspired it. For me, this one suffers from what I consider “flubs” that were pitfalls of the 80s filmmaking (just as I’m sure someday the movies of my time will suffer from), and as a result, I’m critical of films like this. The film, beyond this is kind of forgettable. At least for me.

The story is fun and the film does entertain, but it’s not one that really stays with me. What is fun is seeing Rebecca De Mornay in this after seeing her in the Disney adaptation of The Three Musketeers. The girl power friendship and silliness and humor (yes, these can be two different things) is good fun. I like the partnership that forms and the funny way that these two accomplish things. Beyond this, I really don’t have much else to say about this comedy. Plus, as it turns out Mary’s Janis is quite funny.

If you like the comedies of this era or anyone in the cast then this is one you may want to add to your to watch queue. It does entertain and is one of those easy-watching, doesn’t require much thought kind of 90-some minute comedies.

Stream, at publication, Feds on Prime Video (it’s about to leave) or Plex; or digitally rent / purchase on Prime Video

Content: there is some minor crude humor, but nothing terrible. The guys make suggestive remarks about the girls and give them, in some cases, a hard time. Girls talk about some of these sexual or date experiences; it’s brief and doesn’t get graphic. One person says that they want to see if someone can put them in a coma (after sex). The film is PG-13.
