NOW QUOTING: SOME OF THE BOOK QUOTES I’VE MADE A NOTE OF

When it comes to details about books, like character descriptions or conversations or banter, well, all that is lost on me. I enjoy it all in the moment, but remembering it all isn’t something I make room for in my memory bank. This week though we’re going to feature some of the conversations or quotes from some of the books we’ve read. Finding book quotes to use in a list like this may be a bit labor intensive, but at the same time, I’m going to trust that I have made enough Pinterest graphics or copied and pasted some quotes in book review text that making this list will be less painful.

Let’s see what we can find and discover if we can find enough quotes to create a list. Here we go.

BOOK QUOTES list

one

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice, but this opening quote is a icon and so I kind of “have” to include it as a result.

Two

“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”

― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Again, haven’t read this book. But It’s Austen. It’s Pride and Prejudice. It’s swoony. I have an obligation to include it.

Three

“Even just trying, I decided, could be an act of bravery in itself.”

― Katherine Center, Happiness for Beginners

I just really like this one and it may be one I have on any list like this. I don’t think every act of trying is brave, but I do think in some cases putting forth the best effort or doing something that can be scary does take on a form of bravery, and I think doing things that make us nervous is ultimately good for us.

Four

“What’s wrong with me? … I might seem like the ideal student […] the good girl and the high achiever. But I realized something just now: it’s not ambition, not entirely. It’s fear. Because I don’t know who I am when I’m not working, when I’m not focused on or totally consumed by a task. Who am I between the projects and the assignments, when there’s nothing to do? I haven’t found her yet and it scares me.”

― Holly Jackson, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

There’s a version of this book quote in the script for the BBC and Netflix show, and while I think I like how its scripted better, this too is interesting.

Five

“…choosing to love, anyway.. That’s not weakness, that’s courage.”

― Katherine Center, Things You Save in a Fire

Six

“Life is change ― if nothing’s changing, you aren’t living.”

― Sophie Cousens, This Time Next Year

Quite loved this quote. Based on my tiny world, I feel like people detest change. And while change is scary or can be sad, I think change can also be good, and I think we sometimes have to experience, push for (decide to do the thing that scare us) and allow for change in order to, as the quote would suggest, grow.

Seven

“I’m going because it feels scarier not to.”

― Jenna Evans Welch, Love & Gelato

Eight

“I know I’m not inspiring much confidence at this point, but there’s something else I thought I’d bring up.”

She lifted her eyes to him. “I love you more than I love books.”

― Cynthia Hand, My Lady Jane

Nine

“Would you – would you like to marry me, Kitty?’ Lord Radcliffe – James – asked, voice like gravel. She gave a helpless little laugh at the absurdity of the question – as if he did not know.

‘I would,’ she said. ‘But first, I feel I must inform you that I come with four sisters, a badly leaking roof, and a veritable ocean of debt.’

He had started to smile now, and once begun it did not seem to stop, overtaking his whole face. “I thank you for your honesty,’ he said cordially, and she laughed. ‘May I reassure you that I am desperate to meet your other sisters, the roof sounds charmingly rustic, and the debt does not faze me.’ He paused. ‘Of course, I understand that you will need to see my accounts before committing yourself,’ he went on, and she laughed again, loud and bright.

‘I’m sure that won’t be necessary,’ she said. ‘As long as you can promise you’re absurdly rich and you’ll pay off all my family’s debts.’

‘I am absurdly rich,’ he repeated. ‘And I will pay off all your family’s debts.’ ‘Why then by all means,’ she said, grinning up at him, ‘I would indeed like to marry you.”

― Sophie Irwin, A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting

This is more a dialogue section vs falling into a simple book quotes list, but it was cute.

Ten

“Even the not saying can balloon into something bigger than words themselves.”

― Jennifer E. Smith, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

    1. They don’t for me either, but I looked through the recent books I read (not literally since that’s what GR is for :D), and discovered these. When I find them I remember liking most and the P&P ones are iconic so I had to include those. And I liked the brave quote too! :)

    1. I’ve never read it, but I know some of these are iconic and I still recognize them even having not read the book. As a result I “had” to include them. ;) I loved the change quote too! I feel like most people detest change (when it comes to personal choices or “big” things in their life), but sometimes it’s good and I don’t always think a big change has to be bad. :)

  1. Okay, that was a super smart way to do this! I am sure if I had gone back through reviews I could have come up with 10 as well, but instead I went rogue. Have a great week!
