FIFTEEN BOOKS I’M A FOOL FOR NOT READING

We all have lists; lists of books we should read or don’t. Even if this is only in our heads, we know that they do exist. Some of the books I know I should read, but don’t are usually because they are penned by authors I’ve loved. But then there are a few that just don’t quite fit. In the spirit of April Fool’s Day (and how fun that Jana created a topic around a silly holiday!?), I’m going to share some books I’m a fool for not reading – and maybe this will even inspire you to give some of them a chance!

Let’s see which books (and how many!) I can find that fit this category. I feel like it’ll either be way too long or surprisingly (but happily) short.

BOOKS I SHOULD READ (aka the BOOKS I’M A FOOL FOR NOT READING!)

DEADLY DECOR or THE SHOP-TIL-U-DROP series, GINNY AIKEN

I’ve had these books on my shelf for a long time, and despite their outdated cover art, the stories still sound fun and cute. ‘Decor’ on Goodreads • ‘Shop’ on Goodreads

MOST WONDERFUL CRIME OF THE YEAR, ALLY CARTER

This one sounds SO fun. It’s a Christmas novel and is supposed to be a cozy-esque mystery. Goodreads

THE [REST of the] SELECTION series, KIERA CASS

I have books one and two in this series and did like them. They were, for me, a series I coin with the controversial phrase “guilty pleasure” reads (which I never use as a badge of shame or badly), which meant they were easy, quick reads that didn’t ask me to think while reading. This is precisely what I want from books at certain times, and so when I do, I respect the heck out of a storyteller’s ability to tell something interesting but also make it mindless. Goodreads

A THOUSAND HEARTBEATS, KIERA CASS

Curious to read this since I felt like Cass’ first release post The Selection was way to similar to her debut novel. This one sounds similar too, but I’m hoping it reads different. The plot explores two different classes with a princess and the boy who knows nothing other than duty as a soldier. Goodreads

[MORE by] KATHERINE CENTER

I quite like Katherine’s Happiness for Beginners (and yes, I know I’ve said this a million times) so I need to read more by Katherine. Goodreads

BLUE JUSTICE or DANGER NEVER SLEEPS, series, LYNETTE EASON

It’s been years since I read a series by Lynette, but I used to read books by her including the Elite Guardians. I also read books one and two in the ‘Never Sleeps’ quartet so I should finish the series. ‘Justice’ on Goodreads • ‘Danger’ on Goodreads

WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE SUMMER, JENNY HAN

I think I’ve read books one and two, so reading the final novel is a must on my TBR list. I have never seen the Prime Video show, but I did think the novels are cute. Goodreads

FIFTEEN BOOKS I’M A FOOL FOR NOT READING. A list of books I'd be silly (aka a fool!) for not reading. How many have you read?

DIAMONDS are FOREVER, MICHELLE MADOW

Books one and two in this series aren’t ultimate favorites, but they are soapy, silliness and entertaining. Plus, if I like a series I feel like I may as well finish a series and this Secret Diamond series is certainly a set of books that would fall into that. I think they are set in Vegas and follow three sisters. Goodreads

THE SIREN of SUSSEX, MIMI MATTHEWS

I hear so much praise about Mimi’s books but never have read anything by her. However, I did buy this book by her, so I have this one on my shelf and despite not reading much historical fiction, well, I still would like to give her books a chance. Goodreads

WHEN THE DAY COMES, GABRIELLE MEYER

Not the most avid fan of time slip or duel time stories, but if they’re good, I’m here for them. Plus, this one sounds especially unique in that it’s the same lead character who is living duel times and she much choose between her two lives. It’s also a novel that EVERYONE loves, so I feel like I should give it a chance. Goodreads

[ANYTHING by] BETH O’LEARY

Beth’s books have been a curiosity to me for a while now. Hopefully I’ll read one of them soon. Goodreads

BETTER THAN the MOVIES, LYNN PAINTER

This one is well loved in the young adult genre, and since I did enjoy The Do-Over, I feel like I should give more of Lynn’s novels a chance. Goodreads

ISLA and the HAPPILY EVER AFTER, STEPHANIE PERKINS

After reading the first two “connective” books in this trio by Perkins, I feel like I need to read this novel. Plus, I’m sure it’ll be sweet and fun. Goodreads

JEOPARDY FALLS series, DANI PETTREY

Reading Dani’s series has always been something I enjoyed, but I haven’t read her recent set of novels. Book two comes out this month so perhaps I should make a point to remedy this. Goodreads

TURN to ME, BECKY WADE

Book one in this series is fabulous. It’s still one of my all-time favorite contemporary novels (titled Stay with Me) and so the fact that I didn’t read (at least I haven’t in my book memory bank) this third novel is quite egregious. Goodreads

Have you read any of these? Which ones would you read? Do you recommend any? How many novels are on your ‘books I should read’ list? How many of these do you think I’m a fool for not reading? Comment all of your thoughts below! Let’s talk books.

    1. That’s awesome, Pam. Sometimes I feel like stories don’t need a sequel and it can actually “ruin” what’s good or “timeless” about a story. (I kind of feel that way about the film The Devil Wears Prada; that feels very complete and good “as is” despite its rumored sequel.) I’m glad Beth’s books have mostly been good reads for you! :)

  1. There’s something to be said for books that don’t require you to think while reading them! Sometimes that’s the perfect thing to read.

    1. Too true. Sometimes I don’t mind being “challenged” in my reading. Other times I just want “nothingness” and for me, that is always a plus. :)

  2. Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey are two of my favorite authors! I haven’t begun Gabrielle’s Time Travel series yet. Thank you for sharing your list with us.

  3. I just read Happiness for Beginners this past month and loved it!! I see you talking about it all the time and I was so excited to read it and now I can see why you love it too! I also watched the movie immediately after and didn’t like it as much as the book but it wasn’t bad. 😂

    1. I would agree. The film isn’t as good, but I thought it was still a good watch; I think at the time I was disappointed about the end (of the film) because I thought the book had a stronger ending. :) Glad you enjoyed Happiness for Beginners! :)

  4. Awesome post, Rissi! Once again, I actually know some of the books that you’re referring to, like The Selection. I read up to the book featuring the second selection, and had to put it down. This kind of book that doesn’t require a lot of thinking, and you can just read or listen to an audiobook without having to stay super focused. I call them fluffy bunny books, and think you did a great job of listing some of your fluffy bunnies.

    1. I love your term for books that don’t require us to use extra brain power! It suits them so well. Sometimes a “fluffy bunny” is precisely the kind of book I need. :)
