The Thursday Murder Club, an adaptation, lands on Netflix and boasts a rather good time and cast!

The Thursday Murder Club (2025) Netflix Film Review

Retirement suits some people quite well, but for four retirees, well, boredom sometimes gets the best of them. It’s this that brings four together as they spend their days, just for fun of course, looking at cold cases and well, puzzling through them! This foursome includes the mysterious “international affairs” professional Elizabeth (Helen Mirren) who has a wide skills portfolio; Ron (Pierce Bronson), a trade unionist; helping war vets as a psychiatrist was the profession of Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley); and then there is the newcomer and their resident medical expert Joyce (Celia Imrie), a woman who was once a trauma nurse.

What begins as a way to pass time and have fun soon becomes real when a murder that they have a connection to! This puts them into a real whodunit and questioning who could commit this murder.

A film that immediately drew my attention way back when they announced it, The Thursday Murder Club is, as one could reasonably expect, lots of fun. It has a kind of Red component though of course the stakes aren’t quite as “intense” because that concept it about the CIA versus this film that’s cozy mystery. This one certainly does play up the “cozy” feelings of the favorite mysteries like Marple but it does lean into some darker themes too.

The film also has elements of conflicting relationships through the family or friendship connections of these characters, some of whom are played by additional talented cast members including Tom Ellis, Ruth Sheen and Jonathan Pryce. Everyone is quite good in their respective roles and I enjoyed how everyone plays these roles. It’s also fun to see everyone (mostly) already established as the club, and the “set up” which shows the cold case and then the members of this unusual club working through the facts.

All in all, the film is grand fun and features talented British stars. I am sure it is something that is setting the stage for a possible film franchise, too and if this were to occur, well, there is plenty of good times to still come.

Content: there are a few moments of intensity when it seems someone is in danger. The camera shows a body dead in a pool of blood; it also opens with a woman falling from a great height with a knife in her and we see a pool of blood. There is some crude references and profanity, but not excess. The camera shows nothing but murder / suicide is all but confirmed. The film rates PG-13.
