THE LOVE STORY OF EMILY LANE AND SAM WILNER FROM ‘MISTLETOE MURDERS’
In the Hallmark series Mistletoe Murders we meet two independent characters who perhaps for some don’t really inspire feelings of a would-be romance. However, the show does tease this a bit, it’s just that the story doesn’t allow them to become easily close due to Emily’s closed off personality. Nonetheless, through the first and now second seasons, we do see a few glimpses of a possible romance which inspires this post putting that spotlight on the love story of Emily and Sam from Mistletoe Murders.

The story in season one introduces us to Emily Lane, a woman who owns and operates a year-round Christmas shop in the small town of Fletcher’s Grove. Everyone is quite nice and welcoming, but because of her past (which we learn right off is dark and mysterious!), Emily doesn’t open up to people. Still, her young teenage employee Violet helps her and so does the handsome detective Sam Wilner, who happens to be Violet’d dad. Eventually, catching feelings for Emily, and being who he is, Sam looks closer at Emily which causes issues.
Talk about a “it’s complicated” status, despite this, we want to spotlight the three moments between them that are swoony and well, lovely.

VULNERABLE
The Episode: Season One, Episode 6
In the finale of season one, Emily and Sam get a worth the wait kiss – and it’s sweet! Hearing a noise coming from her shop, Emily heads downstairs where she finds Sam working on a project. They share some conversation with Emily explaining that she’s afraid to be vulnerable, and Sam tells her that he can be patient. She tells him he doesn’t have to be and with swelling music, Emily takes his hand, and the pair shares that kiss. It’s lovely and sweet and both it’s obvious that in this glow, both of them are happy.
Of course, their connection shatters when Sam learns Emily has a secret (why writers?? Why in this moment?) but the promise of season two lingers and so we hope for this happy to return…
CONFESSIONS
The Episode: Season Two, Episode 2 and 4
There is more than one moment between these two that are memorable and heartwarming (including a bit of bantering fighting). One of them is, after not really sharing a meaningful conversation (or solving crimes together!) in over a year, Sam confesses where his heart is at. He tells her he knows he doesn’t always know how to be honest about feelings. First, it’s them in Emily’s apartment where Sam nervously (in a cute kind of way) shares why he dug into her past. This moment haloed by the Christmas lights ends in a near kiss.
Then later (in episode four), what starts as a fight ends with an emotional connection when he tells her that how he shows, in part, that he cares is that he wants to really be there for the people in his life. Not being able to see the danger that Emily may be in, well then that scares him. She’s someone who he now cares deeply about, and he cannot stand not being able to anticipate how she may need him is difficult.
This moment is lovely and is a more intimate look into Sam’s personality.
DANGER and DECLARATIONS
The Episode: Season Two, Episode 6
A possible romance is what the first two seasons build but then season two finale brings them back together; and internally this momentum had me (happily) screaming. Confessions are the theme of the finale, and motivating these mutual confessions is danger! After Sam is caught off guard Emily goes in search of him where the pair become locked in a freezer together. While in this dangerous position, Emily confesses to him a scary truth about her past; and Sam also confesses his deeper feelings.
By the end of the episode, they end up under the glorious twinkling glow of the gazebo. It’s here that they share more confessions and go deeper in their honesty with each other. It’s also where they share a kiss and we now are confident both are invested in making their relationship work.
Any potential season three will, of course, drop more danger and perhaps drive a wedge (again!) between these two. I’m clinging to these moments though; I adore these two who are easily a couple I am wholeheartedly rooting for.
