THE LOVE STORY OF ELIZA SCARLET AND ALEXANDER BLAKE FROM ‘MISS SCARLET’
The finale of Miss Scarlet today makes us long (already) to look back on the romance of Eliza Scarlet and Alexander Blake, or at least what we have seen of this love story so far. So, read on, but just be aware; spoilers will follow!
This love story begins, sort of, in season five of the detective drama, but really gains wings in the just wrapped sixth season. The show follows the spunky and sassy Miss Eliza Scarlet who, in the aftermath of her father’s death takes on his detective business. In season five, she meets the new Scotland Yard detective Alexander Blake and in the sixth season, well, things have progressed.

THE LOVE STORY OF ELIZA SCARLET AND ALEXANDER BLAKE FROM ‘MISS SCARLET.’ Looking back on the moments of romance with #ElizaScarlet and #AlexanderBlake. #MissScarlet #MasterpiecePBS Share on XThere is much to enjoy and swoon over and appreciate about the romance of Eliza and Alexander. However, while he may be softer and therefore more appropriate for modern viewers, I don’t find Alexander so different from William aka the Duke. He still wants the women he cares about to be safe, and he loses his temper with Eliza more than once. The difference here being Alexander does tell Eliza her work is good. Still, modern viewers will respect Alexander far more because of this. For her part, I do think Eliza wants to make this work, and she deeply cares, but she still pursues her cases even at the cost of a relationship or someone else’s career.
All this said, I still love the romance-y moments we get in period dramas, even if they are few. Of course, as this series is ongoing, there is likely more to come for Eliza. Whether it involves more romance with Alexander, well, this remains to be seen, but in all likelihood, this will require future updates. Until then, enjoy the so far…
THE ROMANCE of ELIZA SCARLET and ALEXANDER BLAKE
note; spoilers do follow
HOW it all BEGINS
Episode: Season Five, Episode 1
When Alexander Blake takes over the post at Scotland Yard, Eliza arrives to his office, armed with her references and newspaper articles recounting her work with the Yard.

Naturally the meeting doesn’t go well. He’s brusque and uninterested in her talent. She leaves without the prospect of new work. But then later on when he finds her at a crime scene, she begins to win him over.
THE DOORWAY KISS
Episode: Season Six, Episode 1
We love a well-framed or just lovely kiss, and this one from Miss Scarlet does it well. Their kiss really needs no flowery words. It stands on its own as a red door cheekily closes as he leans in to kiss Eliza. A kiss that may not be modern viewers idea of sexy, for this show, for this romance, for any period drama, well it’s perfectly swoony.
THE FIRST TIFF
Episode: Season Six, Episode 2
Eliza and Alexander promise to forgo work talk during private time (but let’s be real, their respective brilliance is part of the attraction), however they do have a tiff, the first according to him, about the fact that he hires a different private detective that isn’t Eliza.
This entire three in this episode is cute, sassy and ends, of course, in a happy way.
BEST PART of the DAY and CONVERSATION
Episode: Season Six, Episode 4
Many small moments between Eliza and Alexander are quiet moments by the fire where they share conversation. They discuss their cases, and even make choices about what they talk about, which will sometimes mean they cannot (or should not!) discuss work.
One such cute moment happens when Alexander appears at her office, and after asking how his day was, he responds that it was “rough,” to which she wonders if she can help. He says, no, seeing her is all he needs and just being with her takes the sting out of his day. I mean… cute, right?
ELIZA and ALEXANDER SAY I LOVE YOU, yes it does happen in this story
Episode: Season Six, Episode 5
After some bumps in their relationship, the pair seem to drift and decide they need time. Then Eliza swallows her pride, and finds Alexander at his office where interruptions prevent them from getting to the heart of anything. After she’s gone, he finds her glove on the floor, and during a harrowing night of danger and peril, he holds onto her glove, a reminder of all they’ve shared; a reminder of all she means to him.

The next morning, he appears at her door, just as she’s about to leave to find him. Of course they talk, and he admits, flaws and all, he loves her just as he hopes she loves him flaws and all. She (of course!) does, and its an easy admittance which is important for Eliza.
Returning her glove to her is an afterthought, but when he does, she simply says she wondered where that got to.

…and now Alexander understands, she did it on purpose!
THE CHOICE
Episode: Season Six, Episode 6
Despite the unsolicited advice Eliza gets from someone in the finale which is to leave Alexander because no man will never put a woman’s needs ahead of woman, Alexander proves everyone wrong. Before this though Eliza had already chosen him over her fear of possible financial strain, and chooses a path that will ensure Eliza can continue to take cases from Scotland Yard, which is him thinking of the woman he loves even at the risk of change for him.

new to me
I haven’t seen this show.
It’s good if you like period drama. :)
I need to catch up on episodes!
I did enjoy this season. :)
We’ve lost Season 6 in Australia, so taking a sneak peek helped. I love the series – the brilliant scenes of Victorian life, the first-class acting, the screenplay and direction are all brilliant. The only thing I found a bit jarring was the unresolved transition from the Duke to Blake.
I know everyone is loving Blake but I still miss the Duke… even though I also love Blake (and think he and Eliza’s relationship is really well done). Surprisingly, I did think the Duke’s exit was good, and I actually like that he left in order to kind of “end” his relationship with Eliza because he knew she didn’t love him in the way he does. I just hope we get a great final season! :)
