Inspired by a popular novel (of the same name), and like its title, full of a star-studded case, The Five Star Weekend is a story about secrets and the aftermath.

A public life and persona that everyone loves, Hollis Shaw (Jennifer Garner) lives a storybook life. She has a great sense of style and delicious recipes that has become her brand. Now, in the aftermath of a loss that becomes a public spectacle, she needs to get away. So, she hosts a weekend at her Nantucket home where her invitees are three people who became friends in her life at different times.

The guest list includes a childhood friend, college and someone she knew in her 30s, and someone no one anticipates being part of the weekend. But as these women gather, secrets emerge that prove Hollis’ life may have more than one crack.

As a concept or “look,” The Five Star Weekend isn’t something we haven’t seen before. It all sets up as being one of similar tropes which includes the gorgeous views, mom jokes, the conversations (or secrets!) about sex, and the friendships. None of this hasn’t been seen before. This said, the cast is impressive and it is based on a novel by popular novelist Elin Hilderbrand, an author I’ve not read. All of these things combined however, do suggest that this will find its intended audience.

In addition to leading the cast, Garner also EP’s the show and stars alongside Gemma Chan, Regina Hall, Chloe Sevigny, Timothy Olyphant and more! The people in Hollis’ life are interesting as is the main character. It also seems to be a story that will make you root for some before possibly making you then change your mind. But no matter where the story goes, you can be sure these characters will take you on a journey.

If you like any of the other beachfront dramas where secrets prevail, consider The Five Star Weekend.

Content: The show is TV-MA. There are several emotional issues plaguing these characters. From loss to potentially life-threatening illnesses to affairs, there is a lot going on. The show sets up as being one about gossip and conversation about sex lives, who may be having it and who isn’t. There is also different relationships and tangle webs about them. Some new ones form, too. There is profanity too, including the F-word.
