Summer is nearing its end, which is to the disappointment of no one but me, and yet, today is National Beach Day. Because of this, it feels like a good day to create a list of some of the pretty and romantic beach scenes, even if some are more about the water than beach, from the movies. Let’s dive in and see what we find.

From rom-com classics to some of the perhaps lesser-known movies, I’m sure some of these scenes will instantly be familiar to many of us. So, all this to say, here are some of the romantic beach scenes in movies.

50 FIRST DATES

This film has lots of water scenes including how the film eventually ends, but there is also a scene where Adam Sandler’s hero Henry romances Drew Barrymore’s heroine Lucy as they share a night on the beach together. This is one of those rom-coms that I think gets thought of as silly too often, but it really is a charming and perfectly enjoyable film.

ANYONE BUT YOU

The Scene: The Kiss

There are lots of beachy and beautiful scenes in the romantic comedy that made an unexpected splash in 2023, Anyone But You. However, there is a pretty kiss on the beach nearer the end of the film. This comes after all the bad things have been said between the lovers to haters to lovers romance of Bea and Ben.

DEAR JOHN

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, this one tells the story of a soldier who falls in love with a college girl only to eventually, as the years pass, receive a letter from her that breaks things off. Channing Tatum starred in a film that had an impressive cast including Amanda Seyfriend. Their characters, as lovers, share many a charming and romantic scene together in this film.

ENOLA HOLMES 3

This scene is really (really) sweet between Enola and her almost-husband Tewkesbury. Adding this scene may feel silly since it’s a new release, but I was really impressed by the moment as a romantic turning point for these characters. Leading up to it though, the pair have more than one argument, but the scene on the beach, starting with the cliffside walk, is charming and I love the lead in to the beach as much as I like the joyfully sweet scene of them enjoying a swing together and then their confessions of renewed love next to a sparkling fire.

THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB

The Scene: The book club spends a day out together at the beach.

Not a romantic scene, but there is a happy beach day in this film that includes all of the characters as the pair spend the day together on the beach. It’s a sweet and happy experience for everyone to enjoy a day out together and to see them smile, laugh and be happy, well, this makes us happy.

MAMMA MIA!

There are so many beach-y scenes in this film. From the scenes of Sophie and her friends to Donna getting in some pretty beach time, or even Sophie on the water with her possible dads there is a lot to choose from. After all, this is set in one of the prettiest places where crystal like water stretches on for miles. Then on the romantic side we see Sophie and fiancé share their big romantic ballad. And since this list is supposed to lean a bit into the romance of things, this moment and scene with be the focus.

PIRATES of the CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END

The Scene: Elizabeth tearfully bids goodbye the love of her life, Will Turner.

We have to include, bittersweet though it is, the scene where Elizabeth and Will say goodbye after their fiery and unconventional shipboard wedding in the rain. The scene is very bittersweet, but also romantic and loving.

POLDARK tv series

The Episode: Season Two, Episode 4

Don’t ask me to remember all of the context behind the moment where we see Ross carrying Demelza out of a boat stuck in the water, but the photos are beautiful and much of this show centers its promotion on the water. Cinematography, the show is stunning and if you’re currently into The Forsytes, this former period drama is from the same creators. This episode says it’s about the lovebirds going through a tough time and Demelza having to do things she ordinarily wouldn’t when Ross gets caught up with smugglers – and of course, Ross giving her a saving assist in this scene!

It’s been a minute since I watched any episode from this show and honestly, I don’t think I ever watched the series all in full. So, this may be one worth revisiting but tell me all of the things you love about this show.

SAFE HAVEN

It’s been a while since I saw this, but I did like this film, and this is set in lots of pretty beach scenery. There is also a very romantic, even with the danger, sense to this one. However, the primary scene we are discussing is the beach day sequence that is full of joy and laughter. The fact that this is full of so much joy makes the scene even lovelier because the heroine Kate is definitely in need of joy and happiness.

SISTERHOOD of the TRAVELLING PANTS 2

This film has a scene between the besties as they kind of “let go” of some of their past disappointments and look to what the future is to bring. The scene, which takes place during the Greece scenes, shows the friendship and their bond as they take a jump off a cliff into sparkling water below. The scene fits well with the story and the friendship between this foursome.

SOUTH PACIFIC

This one appears elsewhere on data beach movie scenes, and I suppose it’s very fitting because of the setting. It has also been a long time since I saw it, so remembering specific moments escapes me.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA

The Scene: A love story reunion

People often love the scene that this film opens on which is the two lead characters as children having fun on a beach and young Melanie asking young Jake why he’d want to marry her. His response is so he can kiss her anytime he wants. Of course, years pass and they each build lives outside of their messy history and when she returns to her hometown, the pair discover that their past may not really be in the past and so, she ends up finding him on the beach as they reunite and decide to make their love story begin.

…and of course, there are so many more pretty and romantic scenes. From additional Nicholas Sparks adaptations like The Last Song or the Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon, there are lots of stunning scenes that are not featured here. Even the film From Here to Eternity, which is considered the most iconic beach kiss to the more recent dance sequence from Barbie, so many scenes use the beach to help to create the ideal scene. Some of these I have seen and agree they are iconic in their own way, and others are considered objectively famous or they have pretty promotional material.
