5 OF THE BEST TV SHOWS LIKE ‘TOMMY & TUPPENCE’

Set to wrap up its freshman season next week is one of 2026’s most fun shows which is a reimagining of the Agatha Christie stories following amateur detectives Tommy and Tuppence. As the show is set to take its season one bow, this seems like the ideal time to take a closer look at the best things to watch if you have liked the BritBox original Tommy and Tuppence. A series that, for most of its 6-episode run, is a great deal of fun!

The novels with these two as the leads are set in the past, and in this series, BritBox adapts the first adaptation to debut as an English led drama set in modern times. The show follows Tommy, a writer who is doing a favor and taking the wedding photos of a friend. While there he reconnects with Tuppence, a woman he knew in college and still harbors a crush on. This show seems to add more challenges to their would-be romantic reconciliation because of baggage Tuppence is carrying from her recent past. Needless to say, if you like the romance angles of past adaptations you’ve seen, you may find this one a touch more frustrating in that regard!

But enough about the story of this show. If you’ve watched it, you know all of this already. If you haven’t, this is a fellow viewer invitation to consider watching. All this to say, let’s see what other shows you may want to watch if you like Tommy and Tuppence.

TV to WATCH like TOMMY and TUPPENCE

DEATH VALLEY

This is a delightfully quirky crime drama following a detective who pairs up with a former TV star who played a detective. The show has good wit and is, overall, just so much fun with its entertaining and slightly (purposefully) offbeat cadence. The cast is also wonderful and includes Timothy Spall.

Plus, in even better news, the show will return for a second season which means there is more fun (as is implied in the below series two photo!) ahead for these two unusual investigators.

PARTNERS in CRIME, 1983 and 2015

There are two miniseries-like shows that chronicle the adventures of these characters. Both of these though differ from the subject show because they are set in the past, which is more authentic to the books.

The 1980s adaptation takes the more traditional route of following these two when they reconnect and going on the journey of Tommy re-falling in love and the pair solving cases while also finding their footing as partners in life too.

In 2015, a six-episode miniseries was also adapted, this time set in the 1950s and framing the story after they are married and life has settled into the normalcy of well, normal. Jessica Raine led the cast and while I don’t remember all the details, I did enjoy this one.

Synopsis (2015): Partners in Crime is an espionage adventure series about a suburban married couple, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, who solve mysteries and foil plots in ’50s Cold War Britain. Based on Agatha Christie’s classic characters, Tommy (David Walliams) and Tuppence (Jessica Raine) may approach their cases in a somewhat haphazard manner. – via Prime Video

PRIVATE EYES

This isn’t a variation of classic lit, but it’s still a good time. This one is about a former hockey player who ends up co-running a private detective agency with a sassy PI named Angie Everett. This one is “sillier” with its comedy, but has back-and-forth between the leads and of course is about sleuths solving cases! Running for five years, and after five-ish years off air, it’s back with its Private Eyes: West Coast iteration. And yes, the two main characters return.

SHERLOCK

I think this was the first contemporary version of the Sherlock Holmes canon I saw. It was from BBC and featured Benedict Cumberbatch as the iconic London detective. The show is dark at times but still has that underlying comical beat with dry British humor that we love.

This is also one of my most favorite modern versions of a classic. Though I cannot say how good everyone does in regard to this as an adaptation (I haven’t read the books, as usual). Still, this is a quality production.

SHERLOCK and DAUGHTER

This is a show set back in the context of its origin, just like the original Sherlock stories are. However, it’s an iteration of the original canon because this one introduces Sherlock Holmes to a young lady who claims to be his daughter. I only watched an episode or two, and am assuming, based on lack of news, that this one didn’t get a renewal. Still, it was fun and it earns the place because I was trying to find iconic stories that take the idea and make it modern or somehow different.

BONUS! ENOLA HOLMES movies

This is a movie trilogy that is based on a series of novels. It follows the sister of Sherlock Holmes as she undertakes cases in the 1800s. The series is so much fun and just an all-around good time as she goes on adventures including the ultimate mystery: love. Millie Bobby Brown stars in these, and they’re a really good time.
