12 of the Most Fun Half-Hour TV Shows
TV watching comes with a pretty specific checklist at my house. Or it once did. In more recent years, I’ve picked up quite a few sitcoms, all of which are of the happy variety, because, sometimes the end of a day, one needs a silly pick me up. For this reason, it seems like a good idea to spotlight the funny half-hour TV shows I enjoy!
LIST | On the Amazon Prime Watch-list Part 2: Romance, Comedy and More!
Of the titles I’m sharing, some are still current titles, others are long cancelled, but they share the happy genre. Best of all, most of them are accessible on one streaming service or another. Below you’ll find parent comedies, rom-coms, and plain and simple, fun stories. At least I hope you do.
12 Funny Half-Hour TV Shows
listed from a-z
1: About a Boy
Watched this David Walton comedy (based on the British novel) in its entirety; the lead will rub some the wrong way, but overall, it’s a silly and fun time.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
2: American Housewife
This one is still on ABC, and while imperfect (as everything is), it never ceases to make me laugh, and I love that. I also think the titular character’s no-nonsense parenting is hilarious if not totally realistic.
Rating: TV-14 / TV-PG depending on the episode.
3: Bless This Mess
Watched a few of these, a show which is recently cancelled, after seeing the trailers for it. It’s fun (about a city couple who buy a farm), and something I hope to go back and binge watch just to complete the series.
Rating: TV-14 / TV-PG depending on the episode.
4: Cougar Town
Friends alumni Courtney Cox leads the cast alongside Josh Hopkins in this now cancelled show that is quite ridiculous. It follows a 40-something divorcee as she tries to navigate dating and being along after her son goes to college. funny half-hour tv shows
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
5: Fuller House
Haven’t seen this all the way through, but what I did is fun. Plus frequent Hallmark star Candace Cameron-Bure plays a main character. Find exclusively on Netflix
Rating: TV-14 / TV-PG depending on the episode (more on the lower end of the rating).
6: Imaginary Mary
Jenna Elfman leads the cast in this short-lived comedy. Elfman plays a successful woman who begins to date a single dad and in order to cope with the idea of being a stepmother, her imaginary childhood friend returns.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
7: New Girl
Mention this one a lot, I know, but Zooey Deschanel is so cute as a klutzy schoolteacher who begins to room with three guys. Plus, the show all around is like a ray of sunshine.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
12 of the Most Fun Half-Hour TV Shows (Past and Present). Sharing some favorite and funny half-hour TV shows. #TVShows #Comedy #WhattoWatch #AmericanHousewife #TheUnicorn Share on X8: Outmatched
Thought this one would earn a second season, but pretty sure I saw Fox nixed it. Maggie Lawson and Jason Biggs play parents to not one or two, but three genius children.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
9: Last Man Standing
Tim Allen’s show has gotten shuffled from network to network, but it’s a laugh-a-minute about Allen’s character, Mike Baxter, a man who must contend with a house of women including his wife, and three teenage daughters.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo.
10: Running Wilde
An oldie show that hasn’t been on air for quite some time, Keri Russell is fun in this, a story about a woman who lives on the estate of a wealthy childhood friend, a man who hasn’t quite figured life out yet.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
11: Selfie
Pretty sure this is another I haven’t seen in full, but what I remember is that it’s a fun (now cancelled) TV show that re-spins My Fair Lady, all in the age of social media.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.
12: The Unicorn
A first season debut for CBS in 2019, this show does have a new second season order, and while more of a dramedy that some I list above, it’s still a half-hour of happiness. The plot follows a widower, his two daughters, and his best friends as he tries to wade into the dating scene again.
Rating: TV-14 for sexual content including innuendo and profanity.

We love Unicorn!
SAME! It’s just so dang cute. :)
What?! So disappointed to hear Bless this Mess was cancelled. I really liked it. I’ve been wanting to watch Selfie for years, but can’t seem to find it anywhere.
I haven’t seen the entirety (at all) of “Bless this Mess,” but it is quite cute (what I’ve seen). Maybe someone else will pick up ‘Mess.’ One can hope anyway (I am always sad when my favorites are cancelled too). I think initially I saw “Selfie” on iTunes, but as for on any of the streaming platforms, I don’t think I’ve seen it around either.
