WHAT to WATCH if you like THE GILDED AGE
THE AGE of INNOCENCE, film
It’s been way too long since I saw this, but from what I remember, it wasn’t a favorite. The reason for this is the story ends up being kind of sad. It’s based on the novel by Edith Wharton and is directed by Martin Scorsese. Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Winona Ryder leads the cast.

ARISTOCRATS, tv miniseries
This isn’t at all in the same era as The Gilded Age, but it is about women, sisters in this story, trying to make good matches and securing their future. The miniseries is six episodes and has Anne-Marie Duff, Alun Armstrong, Toby Jones and even Jodhi May. Also, fun is seeing, for two episodes, Julian Fellowes play a duke! And yes, it is the Fellowes now creating our favorite romantic period TV shows. I watched part of this, but haven’t finished it – at least not yet.
Story: Based on a true story by Stella Tillyard, a chronicle of the turbulent lives of the Lennox sisters, daughters of the Duke of Richmond, in the eighteenth century. – Prime Video

BELGRAVIA, tv series
Fellowes also had a hand in creating this, as is true of most of the TV shows on this list. The story is about upper class families and the secrets that nearly tear them apart. Its first season is a six-episode collection and then a kind of “second season” appeared that takes place many years after the first season with a subtitle The Next Chapter. Also, can we just talk about how beautiful the promotion for this was?

Story: The Trenchard family have recently ascended to the aristocratic society of London’s Belgravia, but a decades old love affair comes back to haunt them and jeopardize the happiness of many. – Prime Video

THE BUCCANEERS, tv series
This one has a BBC miniseries and an Apple TV+ show. Both are similar in terms of story which is inspired by a novel by Edith Wharton. The BBC version is a bit more “traditional” and seemingly respectful of its era while Apple modernizes the heck out of the story including with the music which often takes me “out” of the era. The plot however follows mostly the same ideas which is about a group of American girls who travel to England in the hopes of enjoying the season and making advantageous matches.
1995’s Story: Two American sisters travel to Victorian England in search of love, wealth and aristocracy. – Roku

DOWNTON ABBEY, tv series
Without the success of this show, we may not have gotten any of the other TV shows with Julian Fellowes credited as creator. Some don’t care for the show, but it’s a favorite of mine. Is it perfect, no. But it does entertain. The show is about the wealthy Crawley family, and the many years they live in their stately estate and trying to hang on to it through the changing decades. The story spans five years and three movies, the third of which is releasing later this year.

THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, film
This follows a family and the “messed” up manner of their lives.
Story: In 1873, in a small Midland town, the magnificence of the Ambersons, the town’s wealthiest family, dominates the social scene. Young George Amberson is the spoiled scion of the wealthy Amberson family. Eugene Morgan is a struggling inventor who loves George’s mother Isabel, but loses her to the wealthy Wilbur Minafer. After an absence of several years, Eugene returns, now successful having invented an automobile, as a widower with an attractive daughter, Lucy. MIDDLEMARCH, tv miniseries
This is an unusual love story about a bright young woman who marries an older man, a man she believes will be an intellectual who will want to talk with her and whom she can learn from, only to later find that passion does matter when she falls for a younger man. The story goes through some political and social complications. watch if you like the gilded age

THE PALLISERES, tv miniseries
I know nothing about this one, but it’s a drama about marriage of convenience and has an Emmy Winner in the cast.
Story: Emmy® winner Susan Hampshire (The Forsyte Saga) stars as the beautiful and witty Lady Glencora, whose arranged marriage to rising politician Plantagenet Palliser (Philip Latham, “marvelous from beginning to end” —The New York Times) endures public and private crises as the family ascends the social ladder. UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS, 2010
This concept is very much like Downton Abbey if I’m remembering right. Keeley Hawes stars in this drama which is set in the 1930s, so later than The Gilded Age.
Story: Six years after parlormaid Rose left 165 Eaton Place, fate brings her back, as housekeeper to its new owners. Rose soon finds she has her work cut out as she recruits a new ‘downstairs’ family to help run the the elegance of the ‘upstairs’ world. – Prime Video

WIVES and DAUGHTERS, tv miniseries
This is one I watched many times back in the day. It’s a sweet story and has themes of friendship as well as romance, and yes, heartbreak too.
Story: From the team that brought you “Pride and Prejudice.” Set in a richly portrayed society well-stocked with eccentric nobles and gossipy villagers, the story centers around 17-year-old Molly Gibson, the only daughter of a respected country Doctor. – Amazon
