‘Christmas on Ice’: One of the Cute Surprises of 2020!

The first of the 2020 Lifetime films I would watch, Christmas On Ice is a romance with a decent cast; and lots of pretty outdoor winter-y scenes.

Christmas on Ice (2020) Lifetime TV Film Review

Working at the skate shack of the outdoor rink, The Oval, is part of what makes Courtney Bennett (Abigail Klein) who she is. She loves her job, which is why the mayor’s decision to shutter the rink is so devastating. Part of the reason why this will happen is because of the fancy new rink about to open by former hockey star, Noah Trembley (Ryan Cooper).

Though Noah offers Courtney a job, she proposes a different idea.  She plans to save the rink. All she needs is a little fundraising, and maybe a bit of Christmas spirit to change the minds of a few Scrooge’s.

In my guessing, this isn’t a Lifetime original I had to win me over. Which is why it surprises me. It’s one of those simple and sweet stories that have some good things going for it. It’s almost the “big” corporation vs little trope, but also, isn’t, and so because of this, the trope comes across differently. There is still a misunderstanding that leads to a “break up,” but for the most part, the script is decent and best of all, fun!

What I like so well about this is the cast. The young actress who plays Grace is darling; and really, she also does a great job at playing the role well. Sometimes this is hit or miss with new actors, but here Meara Mahoney-Gross plays the role so well, and seems “good” with her on-screen TV dad, too. Speaking of Ryan Cooper, it’s great to see him again in another Christmas romance; last year, he was one of my favorites from Christmas a la Mode.

In the end, as is usually my Christmas movie sign-off, Christmas on Ice succeeds in being another fun thing to enjoy.
