ABOUT A MOVIE ANNIVERSARY: THE FUN OF ‘A KNIGHT’S TALE,’ 20 YEARS LATER + QUIZ

I’ll confess something. Last week I let a very important date sneak past me. This date is the 20th (!!!) anniversary of the Universal film, A Knight’s Tale, 20 years later. This is one of those films that, EVERY SINGLE TIME, makes me smile. I haven’t seen it in years, but last night I started to re-watch it, and yes, let me tell you, it’s still as fun a film as ever.

QUIZ | ON THIS DAY 10 YEARS LATER: CELEBRATE ‘THOR’ + A QUIZ!

Like I said, I completely MISSED this official anniversary (May 11), but I simply could not let the month end without recognizing the fun of this flick. Really, in its own way, it’s a timeless movie in its genre that makes itself relevant with its contemporary themes and looks. There’s all sorts of things to love about this film. The story follows a young man named William Thatcher (expertly played by Heath Ledger) who, while in service to a knight, ends up masquerading as his liege when he unexpectedly dies. Without papers or a noble birthright, William along with his trusty squire’s make plans to make this life work. They’re going to need luck, or maybe a Chaucer they meet on the road.

Here’s three reasons why this film is so timeless, and a fun little movie quiz, too.

1: CHARACTERS

Every single one of these ‘movie anniversary’ publications (here) seems to get a shout-out for the characters, but if ever there was a movie that earns it, it’d be for these characters. They’re just so fun to hang out with. Everyone plays an important role, and I love everyone from its leading hero right down to the sassy and opinionated Kate. (Also, does anyone else think she – in certain moments, crushes on William just a tiny little bit?)

2: MUSIC

The unintentional (or intentional?) ‘We Will Rock You’ theme song is so good for this. As far as pop culture goes, the song doesn’t fit the era, but it does fit the direction the directors and producers take, and it’s hilariously good. Plus the music adds such a good energy to the film.

3: STORY

This is SUCH a good story. It’s one of courage and standing up for your dreams no matter the taunting. It’s one of doing what’s right even when the crowd says it’s wrong. That’s inspiring.

(Plus, the camaraderie is pretty dang cool, too.)

That wraps my three, minor key points on why A Knight’s Tale is so fun. Now we invite you to join our little movie quiz, too!
