POP CULTURE NEWS (JUST FOR FUN): EDITION ONE

by

Hey, there, everyone! Just for fun, I’m doing something different today which is recap some interesting (kind of?) pop culture things I’ve read about recently. So, today begins the Pop Culture News, Edition One. Let’s jump in, shall we.

LIST | MOVIES I SAW WHEN THEY WERE NO LONGER COOL. (BECAUSE I’M NOT COOL)

So, for some reason I’ve been super into pop culture news stories recently. Probably in part because of some of the things I’ve been watching and listening to. But I’ve spotted some interesting stories in the scene recently and just thought it might be fun to recap them and share some of my thoughts on these news-y stories. Because sometimes it’s just more fun to have some fun, right?

Rumor has it that there’s a TV show in the works for the Pitch Perfect franchise. The rumors also report that Adam Devine will head the cast and living in Germany. Early reports claim the plot reads as follows “Bumper moves to Germany to revive his music career after one of his songs becomes big in Berlin.”

I’m mixed about this. On one hand I’d say I would watch it, but on another, I feel like this plot will “ruin” the fun of the earlier feature films. What are your thoughts –and would you hope to see some updates on your favorite characters from the films?

BOND, JANE BOND.

There’s been rumors for quite some time now that the iconic Ian Flemming character of James Bond would become a woman now that actor Daniel Craig is stepping down from the role after playing it for much for the 2000s. His swan song as the character arrives in No Time to Die, which releases in November.

In response, presumably to these rumors, Daniel Craig has said that he doesn’t think the iconic character should be played by a woman. He further went on to say, in part, to Radio Times “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

I do agree with Daniel Craig for a few reasons (and not his narrative). One is because I’m not a feminist in the way the narrative says I have to be and secondly, James Bond is a man. No matter the attempts to vilify men, his gender is part of the reason why the character works. Others on social media have made the point that they too like and want Bond to stay a man in the same way we wouldn’t want to see Elle Woods or Diana Prince in a gender swap film. Same can be said for any Austen character like Elizabeth Bennet. I wouldn’t want to see any serious adaptation change her for a man.

What’s your thought on this?

LOOKING GOOD, NEW GIRL
New Girl, Season One and Two

Just saw today that 2021 marks ten years since New Girl debuted! I wasn’t watching it back then and in fact still haven’t – gasp! – finished the series, but what I’ve seen is good. It’s a fun TV show about a group of best friends who end up living together, and in many cases, find themselves in more than one sticky situation.

NETFLIX RETURNS TO VIRGIN RIVER

According to TV Line, Netflix renews Virgin River for seasons four and five. I am HERE for this. I know many people don’t like the series, but for me, it’s a relaxing show I watch when I’m ready to “chill” so I’m all for it as long as they don’t go full on heartbreak. They further go on to report some of its stats which included the following information viewer information that it amassed “2.1 billion minutes viewed across 30 episodes.”

You can read the story in full on TV Line, but be aware, there’s SPOILERS in the story.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME: RUSSELL T DAVIES RETURNS

If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you may enjoy knowing that its former showrunner Russell T Davies is set to return in 2023. He’ll helm the upcoming series, a creative whom TV Line reports in 2005 he helped to “re-launch the show into the global phenomenon it has since become.”

Jodie Whittaker the first woman to play the Doctor also announced her exit along with the former showrunner Chris Chibnall, who says about Davies return, “It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home…”

BONUS! WILD(ER) DREAMS

Despite Red being her next re-release, Taylor Swift recently released her version of ‘Wildest Dreams’ from 1989. What did you think of this release?

  1. My husband mentioned something, I think, about the Doctor Who item. I’m excited to see who gets the role next! And James Bond, too, they’ve been throwing out names for so long!
