POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION 30: MORE BIG TV MOVIE MOVES + OTHER HEADLINE FUN
Hey, there! We’re back at it with a Pop Culture News Edition Thirty (!!) with some big stories. They’re big if you’re into TV movies news and names that are very familiar with TV watchers. If not, you’ll find this story boring. But maybe they’ll be something else to catch your fancy!
TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE UNICORN,’ SEASON TWO: FINDS MORE MAGIC BUT LEAVES WITH QUESTIONS
Read on below for this week’s bigger, and some of the smaller headlines in the world of pop culture from this past week. This will also include one or two headlines I MEANT to include in previous weeks and forgot. Which is really, just bad form on my part. But regardless, they’re getting a mention, so let’s go!
POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION THIRTY
1: FALL TV IS HEADING TO OUR SCREEN
Networks are announcing casting left and right for their upcoming fall 2022 premieres, which is prime premiere slots for the “big” shows. ABC has some coming called Will Trent about the titular Georgia Bureau special agent, which makes me feel like the show could have some of the smaller team vibes as CBS’ The Mentalist. The show will star Ramón Rodríguez and has just cast Hallmark and Parenthood star Erika Christensen. No stranger to ABC, Rodríguez starred in the short-lived series Charlie’s Angels. The show sounds dark following an agent who grew up in the foster system, and seems to suggest the show will, in part, deal in the personal demons he and his childhood friend face. pop culture news edition thirty

This past week, the BIG small screen TV news is that Candace Cameron Bure made a move. The popular Hallmark Channel “Queen of Christmas” signed a deal with new network GAC oversee the curating of content. According to the articles, she’ll also take on an executive role to develop, produce and star in movies which I kind of love and am curious to see what this will mean and look like. She joins fellow TV alumni Danica McKeller and also, familiar leading man Trevor Donovan in making this move. Hallmark has also been busy signing stars (the likes of which I’ve NEVER seen before) like Andrew Walker and Lacey Chabert. Who do you think will make the next GAC move or commit to Hallmark?
On the heels of this news, Hallmark also locked down Taylor Cole for their Christmas movies.
Speaking of Hallmark, there’s also a bit of controversy surrounding one of its mystery series. Actress Jill Wagner has been rumored as the reason why Hallmark won’t produce another Mystery 101 film. In the past week or so, she set the record straight on her social media Instagram page saying if ever the opportunity arose, she’d gladly return. It’s all in Hallmark’s hands is essentially her message, which I don’t doubt.
Additionally, I will just say, though I have zero clue if this is true, if Jill starring in a GAC film (back in 2021) is reason why they won’t make more, that’s sad. Same goes for Candace. Many are reporting her Aurora Teagarden series is DOA, however, her deal with GAC is not exclusive. Crown Media (aka Hallmark) did release a statement saying they wish Bure the best and enjoyed working with her. Still… if her deal isn’t exclusive, dude, can’t she still produce more movies with you? pop culture news edition thirty
FINAL THINGS
- Two or three weeks ago, the announcement was made that Dancing with the Stars which has seen DECLINING viewership for years now will make the move from its primetime ABC slot to Disney+. What to you think of this? Will this prompt you to get a subscription or are you over bad reality TV? I haven’t watched DWTS in two years (at least), despite it being my only reality TV watch, so I don’t care and this is NOT going to inspire me to pick up another streamer.
- Marvel (aka Disney) dropped its new trailer for Thor: Love & Thunder (set for July 8), which we talked about here. I will say, I’m not thrilled with how it sounds.
- Had ZERO clue this was a thing, but Starz will debut a new drama about Elizabeth in a Tudor drama called Becoming Elizabeth. The drama is set to debut on their app in June.
- Netflix is adaptating the Wattpad novel My Life with the Walter Boys and has its leading lady in Nikki Rodriguez. Joining the cast is Suits star Sarah Rafferty (SO excited to see her in something new – that is, if I watch this) and also Mark Blucas.
- Speaking of Netflix, their stock dropped 30-some percent which is the biggest drop in a decade and according to articles, quite significant. Cannot say that I don’t understand the reason or reasons for this. In addition to cracking down on password sharing, the streamer says it will add an ad-enabled option in the “next year or two.”
- The film adaptation formerly known as Text for You that was set to release in 2022 now has a February 2023 release date and a re-title that is It’s All Coming Back to Me. Can’t say that I love the change. pop culture news edition thirty
