POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION 26: NEW MOVIE TRAILERS + A FUNNY SING OFF WIN
Friday is the day we have a little pop culture fest, because why not? This week it’s a Pop Culture News Edition Twenty-Six, and there are a few fun stories I did see. Some are super silly, and others are about some upcoming movies. Just hoping we find some good movies coming.
PRIME TV REVIEW | PRIME’S ‘REACHER’ IS A GRITTY BUT GOOD LEE CHILD ACTION SERIES
Netflix is at the forefront of the upcoming film I’m excited about but there is also some random celeb stories and the like. There’s a bit of Hallmark movie news from the week, too, and who knows what else we’ll find. Let’s just dive in.
POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION TWENTY-SIX
1: AN ICONIC ACTRESS AND ICONIC MUSICIAN TELL A STORY
Reese Witherspoon and Dolly Parton are teaming up in an adaptation of Parton’s recent co-written (with James Paterson) novel Run, Rose, Run. According to reports, the film (based on the novel) will follow a young woman trying to make it in the music industry, only her lyrics reveal a deep-seeded secret. One that if it came out would ruin her life. This isn’t the first time Witherspoon would star in a country music type film. The first was 2005’s Walk the Line which received Oscar nominations. Does this sound like something you’d watch?
The book has hit the NYT best-seller list as well.

The Netflix adaptation of Sarah Dessen’s novel Along for the Ride dropped its trailer this week. What do we think? Only bad news is, it’s tagged with a TV-MA rating which means it won’t be a To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before vibe.
As someone who loves contemporary romance, I have actually never read a novel by Deseen. Seems odd to me, but this is also true of my Kasie West story. I didn’t read them for years before I finally did and discovered I really enjoyed her books! Has this ever happened to you?
3: REGRETS
On Instagram, I ran across a story about Sandra Bullock revealing which film she’s still embarrassed that she made and was a part of. During promotion for her new film The Lost City, the actress had a few things to say about making Speed 2, which is one of those films that was treated really unkindly at the box office. The first film featured Bullock and Keanu Reeves trying to stop a bomb going off on a bus. I’ve never seen either film, so I wouldn’t have a clue, but I’d guess despite its flop status, Speed 2 is a fun albeit silly time.
LAST WORDS
- Only Murders in the Building will return to Hulu on June 28. Are you a fan of the show, and should I watch the rest of season one? I watched the first episode but honestly really detest anything with an overabundance of language. So I have to really like something to keep going.
- Actress Holly Robinson Peete has signed a “multi picture” deal with Hallmark. This deal also gives them “exclusivity on holiday movies.” A couple weeks ago, Brennan Elliot also signed a deal with Hallmark. All of this is interesting and I think we’re seeing more of a flurry of deal signing given the newer network GAC has former talent like Danica McKeller and Trevor Donovan. There seems to be a kind of “war” on the talent. Interesting for sure, but really, I think it’s nice if talent can find their “creative” home which I know is something Danica McKeller spoke on as to why she signed with GAC.
- The social media overlords are STILL doing their annoying and appalling thing (same as last week) by banning more Twitter accounts this week. One of which is the founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk. Like, same as I said last week for West, who do they think they are? Also, who appointed them the “protector” of feelings? Like, no matter WHAT we say, someone is going to take it wrong. Additionally, why do everyone else’s beliefs, religions or convictions except Christians get to be expressed?
- In a silly story from the week, did you see that Anne Hathaway BEAT Kelly Clarkson (while on The Kelly Clarkson show) during a Name That Tune battle with one of Kelly’s own songs? Super cute and fun!
- Sasha Alexander and Michael Weatherly’s Cate and Tony (from NCIS) “reunited” in a photo from the set of Bull where Alexander directed an episode in the final season run.
- Liz Tigelaar (creator of Little Fires Everywhere) will helm the 54-week best-seller The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Anyone going to watch this eventual Netflix production? Despite the hype I never really got into the idea of this novel. Tigelaar is also the former show-runner of Life Unexpected and is currently serving as adapter for Reid’s Malibu Rising.
- Christina Ricci will join the Netflix series Wednesday (she previously starred as Wednesday Adams in the 90 feature films). According to the reports, her role is undisclosed.
- The adaptation for Where the Crawdads Sing dropped its trailer this week (it opens in July), and the big surprise there is Taylor Swift is musically part of the film. She wrote an original song after being inspired by the book. I’ve been reading up on the book this week, and honestly, despite its best-seller status, I just don’t see it as being a me book. Have you read it, and do you recommend?
You know the drill. Which of these stories did you see? Did any catch your eye that I share? Do you agree or disagree with the thoughts? Which types of stories do you like best? Are you excited for either of the films we talked about? Or any of the in-progress movies that are going to be made? Let’s chat!
Thank you for visiting! Please, do come back soon.
I wasn’t crazy about Only Murders in the Building at first, but it grew on me! Steve Martin was really good in it.
I should go back and watch another episode. I didn’t hate it by any means but it’s always a pet peeve of mine when there’s “too much” profanity. :D
