What Like it’s Hard? MEET TEENAGE ELLE WOODS

Way back when it was announced, which we mentioned in another pop culture roundup, there was a good deal of speculation as to who would be stepping into the shoes of Elle Woods. The iconic character, a woman any millennial knows as the plucky heroine who loves pink and gets into Harvard because of her ex, is an iconic role for Reese Witherspoon. In the role, Witherspoon proves that women can be smart, yes, but this doesn’t have to come at the cost of embracing the fun and feminine side of life.

According to a joint post from Reese Witherspoon and the production behind an upcoming Prime Video and MGM series, the new face bring Elle to life will be Lexi Minetree. The newcomer has credits for a handful of TV mysteries, but from the looks of things, this series, simply titled Elle, will be her first major role. Admittedly, I do think casting an unknown is smart. Described as a prequel series, this will follow the heroine during her years in high school, which I am sur will show off more of the sass we love from her. According to articles prior to this announcement, the shortlist for this role was down to Minetree and Madison Wolfe.

While I am sure I will give this series a chance, I have to say, the fact that this is a prequel rather than a reboot makes me sad. I don’t begrudge studio execs not wanting to reboot because Witherspoon is iconic as Elle, but I do despise prequels!

More STORIES

Netflix is set to dive into more feel-good drama by adapting Ransom Canyon. Based on the novels by Jodi Thomas, the drama will have Josh Duhamel & Minka Kelly in lead roles. According to the Goodreads synopsis for the 2015 novel, the story is about (in part), “Rancher Staten Kirkland, the last descendent of Ransom Canyon’s founding father [a man with] troubling memories [when] he runs to lovely, reclusive Quinn O’Grady.” Other characters mentioned in the synopsis include Lucas Reyes (a guy looking to be more than a ranch hand’s son by going to college); and Yancy Grey (a character described as having a troubled past who wants to leave). The series synopsis opens reading that this series is a “compelling, emotionally resonant series set in a remote west Texas town—where family can be made by blood or by choice…” Who knows how many of these characters we’ll meet, but these are mentioned in the book’s synopsis!

LIST | THE MEMORABLE LOVE STORY OF MADDIE AND CAL: ‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS’ OTP FAVORITE

While I do try to cover the “big” pop culture stories, unless they’re overly depressing or needlessly divisive, one story I haven’t consistently mentioned is the Lively vs. Baldoni saga. Honestly, I’m repeating what I’ve already said. It’s boring. I was going to write about it last week but found other things interesting. I saw a portion of the behind-the-scenes clip of them dancing and saw nothing inappropriate there. Additionally I did hear a voice memo and saw some texts and those, yes, I see them as leading or possibly inappropriate (is this the way creatives filming talk to each other?). But I think going back to what I said week’s ago both people contributed to the “inappropriateness” there. Maybe I’ll write a discussion thing on this someday. Maybe I won’t. I just think sometimes people loathe each other, and part of the way they can sway favoritism, is by “weaponizing” social media, which I think both “sides” have and will continue to do.

Comment all of your thoughts below. Let’s talk about these and any other stories that made you curious this past week.

    1. So true! From what I see, everyone is really impressed with her audition so I’m hoping she’ll be good. I just don’t love going “back” in a story when I already know the end. ;)
