MOVIE NEWS: NEW ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ TO MAKE CHANGE

Hello, fellow moviegoers! My normal publication schedule is sort of out of hand this week because of the holiday, so I’ve been scrambling to find my footing and decide what to publish. The movie news world gave me something in the recent release of its preview of Thor: Love and Thunder. I’ll confess, I haven’t done my full “research” as I write this because I want to get some thoughts down pre first, but from what I am seeing, I am already a little disappointed.

According to one overview of this fourth film in the Thor franchise from Marvel, the film will follow our character, “Thor goes on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to Thor’s surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

The film will see the return of Natalie Portman (who, don’t mistake me, I’m glad is back), Jaime Alexander, Tessa Thompson, and of course, Chris Hemsworth.

Ok, here’s my thought. I liked Thor, cannot remember much about its sequel and had way too much fun watching Thor: Ragnarok. This plot? Eh, not thrilled with. Why must writer’s “replace” (in some sense) every hero I come to love? Like, why not let Jane adopt something that’s not Thor and make her her own person? Or just keep her as is and let her brilliance be the team dynamic? I don’t know. Just feels “off” and lazy to me. Also not thrilled with the whole “inner peace” idea. That said, I’m going to watch the teaser and depending on the reaction to that, who knows, maybe I’ll eventually see Thor: Love and Thunder.

The promotional material and even ‘Ragnarok’ gives these movies this kind of rocker vibe. I kind of like this because it sets Thor’s franchise apart from the rest of The Avengers. The film will release July 8. If you do want to watch the preview, you can find it at the link below.

  1. I love Thor. Dearly. He’s been my favorite Avenger since the first time I saw The Avengers in 2012 — his line “Give up this poisonous dream; you come home” to Loki tipped me right off a cliff into total fandom, even though I had not seen any of the previous MCU movies. I became a total MCU fangirl, and my fan love has been centered around Thor.

However. When I saw Spider-Man: Far From Home, it made me start to think maybe I didn’t want to proceed farther into the MCU. I love how Endgame ends. I love where everyone is at the end of it. There’s closure and peace. But then the next two Spider-Man movies and the Loki show started to erode that, sometimes subtly and sometimes not so subtly.

And I just… think it’s time for me to end my MCU journey. I don’t mean I am done ever watching any of the movies ever again — that would be silly, especially since I own everything from the first Iron Man through Endgame on DVD. I will enjoy them over and over in years to come. But I have decided not to step forward into the next phase. I’m choosing to stay with the happy ending.

So, much as I love Thor, and much as I enjoy Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of him, I really don’t think I’ll be going to see the new movie. I’ll pull Ragnarok out and rewatch it for the umpteenth time instead.

    1. That’s so cool! It’s so fun to know everyone’s different perspective or “fangirl” moment for the MCU. I think I’d seen an Iron Man movie or two prior to the “real” start of the franchise, and now I’m just mostly annoyed and disappointed by the direction and in some cases, the erasing of what made these movies truly good. I haven’t seen ‘Far from Home’ or ‘Loki’ (and I don’t plan to see the latter because I won’t add another subscription service), but I feel the same. I *hate* (in a fangirl way) how they explode and challenge and change the characters that were so formative. There’s growth for a character and then there’s writer’s just being unnecessarily cruel.

I think Ragnarok is WAY fun. I didn’t expect to love it like I did, but my memory of it is grand. I should re-watch everything and honestly, I haven’t even watched this trailer yet. ;) Weird I know since I’m writing about it and wanting conversation. I have zero issue with spoilers, I just don’t want the visualization I guess.

Like you, I think I’m 99% done with this “new” version of MCU. I *may* see this version of Thor and I may not. Just depends on how I feel once it’s widely available. (I sure don’t rush to see them anymore.) Makes me sad they ruin these happy endings so much and really, I feel like if they wanted this “new phase,” why not create new stories (even with some of the same characters) that leaves the ‘Endgame’ alone?

  2. When Thor first arrived in the MCU, he seemed so serious, so I like the direction they’ve gone in to make him more humorous. Chris Hemsworth is so good at that! I don’t get the whole Jane Foster thing, unless it has something to do with the multiverse? Either way, we’ll be seeing this one!

    1. Hope you enjoy, Angela! I haven’t watched the trailer still (weird I know :D), but from what I’ve read, the Jane Foster Thor thing just is odd. I know there is a female Thor in the comics (or that’s what I’ve seen), but still, have her be who she is and let that be a part of the story. I’m SO out of the loop with the multiverse so I don’t even know anything about that. ;)

  3. Well, I saw Thor: Love and Thunder . . . and I was not very impressed. Though Thor did exit his Pillsbury Dough Boy phase and got back to his original mighty Thor physique, I felt like they now turned him into a lovesick puppy. He wasn’t the original gripping warrior I so loved and enjoyed. The rest of the movie was just ok. I have really enjoyed watching the Marvel Avengers movies right through to Endgame. I am wondering though, like some of the comments above, if this is an indication of how future Marvel movies will be??? I sure hope not.

    1. I wonder this too, Alison. I haven’t seen this one yet, but the more I read about some of their recent productions or see promos or Tweets, the more I wonder at the direction they’re going. I liked through ‘Endgame’ (which I think ended their last phase), but beyond that, I’m just not loving what I read. I think I have seen a Spider-Man movie post ‘Endgame.’ I’m sad to hear Thor isn’t mighty (or as) anymore. That’s part of his character appeal, I agree. Really appreciate you sharing your thoughts, Alison! Honestly I’d sort of forgotten about this one so maybe that’s a sign that I’m not interested anymore. ;)
