If you haven’t been able to tell based on the content here lately, I’ve been re-watching a multitude of older films and films I once liked. One of these is the adaptation of Austenland (which I never did read). Resulting from this re-watch I have discovered something and that is there are more than one reasons why I still love Austenland. Let’s talk about them, shall we?
LIST | 13 POPULAR ‘CSI’ CHARACTERS: MY LEAST TO MOST FAVORITE
Years (and years) ago now I went to a theater to see this film. It was quite a journey since the theater closest did not pick this one up. Then the next closest also didn’t. Needless to say we had to travel over an hour away into a suburb to see the film. (This won’t sound like a big deal to most, but if you knew my day to day life, this is kind of a deal.) Then after ALL OF THAT, we dang got lost! It’s a whole story. It’s also a memory. Needless to say, watching this film reminded me of all that and I’m just here for the laughs.
The film, if you don’t know, follows a thirty something woman obsessed with Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy. When we say this, we mean the obsessive reaches new heights. Her room is all in homage to Jane Austen and when she goes through her latest break up, she ends up taking a trip to an England destination Austenland; an immersive and inclusive Jane Austen experience.
Today let’s talk about a few of the reasons why I still really like Austenland – silliness with its flaws and all.
REASONS WHY I STILL LOVE AUSTENLAND
beware there are spoilers
1: THE AIRPORT
I mean, yes, the scene is silly, but we also love it, right?
YES I STILL LOVE ‘AUSTENLAND.’ HERE’S EIGHT IMPORTANT REASONS WHY #MOVIES #JANEAUSTEN #AUSTEN #FUNNYMOVIES #GOODMOVIES #JJFEILD #KERIRUSSELL #COMEDY #HUMOR #FUNNY Share on X2: THE (ABSURD) COMEDY
The script is really good. The humor is this kind of dry wit that won’t hit everyone the right way because, let’s be real, it can be absurd. I think part of this is because it’s often all in this kind of over-the-top and exaggerated humor. It’s meant to be this way, but then there’s more subtle things that honor Jane Austen. Either way, I’m not sure the film knows if it’s a spoof or straight up comedy. Nonetheless, it’s entertaining and fits for anyone willing to enjoy this as it comes.
3: THE DOORWAY
This scene is all kinds of lovely, even the conversation through a closed door is sweet and charming. Plus the fact that Jane is the way she is, and Henry (who is played by JJ Feild) seems to genuinely fall for the dreamer Jane. Additionally I have mad movie respect that it does not go the direction most rom-coms would take it.
4: THE (FAKE) PUG
Minor though this element is, we love the fake pug. There’s just something about it that is hilarious. reasons we love austenland
5: JANE
Kerri Russell’s Jane is an ideal heroine. She’s extremely easy to relate to not just in a realistic sense but also reminds us it’s ok to have some sense of romanticism. She’s a wonderful character that is, in my opinion, impossible to dislike.
6: MISS CHARMING aka JENNIFER COOLIDGE
Part of the reason this character is so very memorable and hilarious is she’s played by Jennifer Coolidge who is always comedy gold. The character here is primarily the comedy but she’s also one with a good heart who does honestly operate as a friend to Jane.
7: MR. NOBLY
I mean, come on, this is a no-brainer! Who doesn’t like our modern day Mr. Darcy?
8: THE ROMANCE
Whether it bothers some or not, and I know it does bother many viewers, the romance here is charming. It’s minor in comparison to some romantic films, but what is here is GOOD. It has all the proper moments of swooning when it needs to and we even get an eyelock or two as well as the most ideal swoon of an ending.

Austenland is a national treasure, end of story.
(I feel like we also need to give a shout-out to Miss Heartwright — her parody always kills me.)
*claps* You say the only thing I should have said. :)
