‘ENOLA HOLMES 2’: NETFLIX WINS BIG WITH MORE ENTERTAINMENT

Sequels aren’t always well liked and it’s a fair enough reasoning. However with a slew of novels on which to draw inspiration from, Enola Holmes 2 was bound to happen.

Enola Holmes 2 (2022) Netflix Review

Making her way after her mother left and finding her independence has been the sole goal of Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown). With a small detective agency, she strives to make her business work only the challenge is no one likes that she’s a woman and assumes perhaps Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) can find the time. Unwilling to go to her brother for help or use him to make her own name, Enola keeps away from Sherlock. Perhaps in part because they were all raised to be alone and rely only on independence.

However her latest case seeking the sister of a young girl working as a match girl somehow intertwines with that of Sherlock’s latest case. Something that stumps him. A ball, which is not Enola’s forte and the return of a familiar face, is about to complicate her life. Again.

Unusual for me to re-watch prequel movies, knowing this was about to drop, I did re-watch Enola Holmes in anticipation of this. It was as entertaining as I remember and with perhaps a blip in this sequel, this one follows in its footsteps. There’s this sense of supreme enjoyment a viewer finds in films. Which is the primary theme I’m looking for in my entertainment.

What may fail slightly in this is some of the same themes and ideas find their way into this. That does annoy me just a little bit because I saw all of this prominently in the first film. Nonetheless, because I do try to go into anticipated films as blindly as possible, the theme shifting to famous Sherlock elements does surprise. This isn’t a disappointment since the script allows for both characters to have the spotlight and I’m here for it since I am a fan of Henry Cavill. He’s not Sherlock canon but I like him so I allow it. Similarly Millie Bobby Brown is fun in the titular role and for the most part, I love the entire cast and hope we see them re-team in an eventual third movie.

With fun adventure and action sequences with swords and revolvers, Enola Holmes 2 is prime adventure fun. The costuming is lovely as is the look of everything. Additionally, I really appreciate the realization by both Sherlock and Enola that being alone isn’t how to do life. I respect that the writer’s are allowing Enola to understand this and to form connections. I’ve loving these charming moments for Enola that enforce this. The one thing that does make me sad is that Enola leaves Sherlock but it’s also fun to see another canon set up. At the end, there’s satisfaction but if the themes and actors could return, I’d be third adventure ready.

You can stream this sequel exclusively on Netflix.

  1. Eleanor and I absolutely ADORE the book series. It ended with book six and was wrapped up so nicely, with an afterwrd from Sherlock about how he admired his sister. But once the movie came out, the book series had to continue. Luckily, the books still feel and sound the same. We love the movies too, but I wish they followed the books more closely. And I am not cool with the romance, Enola is too independent to have to be shoved into a relationship for the sake of having one in the movie! But they’re still fantastic books and movies.

    1. I think most people probably agree with you about the romance. ;) I think it’s really well done because I’m not an advocate for being “alone.” Doesn’t mean it always has to be romance, no, but I do think we should have and do need good people in our lives and I think the romance is helping to teach Enola this. I’m sorry the movies don’t match up in terms of the plots or stories. This is a feeling I know WELL! Sometimes it bugs me more than others. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Sarah! Really enjoy reading other’s thoughts and perspectives. :)

  2. Yes! Luckily in this case it does not bug me nearly as much as in other movie adaptations, because Enola is such a well fleshed-out character. Being alone is just so much apart of Enola’s charm in the book, that she’s really fought hard to not be sent off to boarding school and to defy her brothers. And the point really gets hammered home in the books, her mother’s words, “You will do quite well on your own”. And Lady Cecily Alistair is a recurring character in the books who Enola has to save more than once, and that friendship could be explored in the movies. I really hope they continue making more books and films, she is such a fun character.

    1. I agree! She is a really fun characters. Have we met Cecily in the movies yet? I don’t think so right…? Either way, I too hope we see more movies. The cast is fun and the overall “feel” of the films is just so exciting and entertaining. Hope they do well enough for Netflix to make more. And in the meantime maybe I should give the books a chance, too!! :)

      1. I have not actually seen the second one yet, but Eleanor said that there was a character named Cecily in the second one. It did not sound at all like the Cecily we meet in the books though, so maybe she misheard the name. I love the feel of the movies too, and Millie is so perfect as Enola. I would highly recommend the series, there are so many details and extras that the movies simply don’t have time for. I suppose that’s true of every book to movie adaptation, but there’s just something so special about the books, especially the original six. Definitely give them a try when you have the chance!

        1. Maybe I’m just forgetting the character! *goes to look* Ok I think I remember who she is! There is a scene or two with her and Enola. Wonder if she’ll return in a possible third movie. I need to head over to Book Outlet to see if they have any. Since I love the movies I suspect I’d enjoy the books too!! Really glad to know they expand even more. :)
