SEVEN TV CHARACTERS I DON’T KNOW IF I SHOULD LIKE EVEN THOUGH I DO

Ok, here’s the truth. I wrote a TV character’s I don’t care for list not too long ago. Given all the books I’m currently not reading (*sad face*), asking me to remember the characters from books I don’t love is a stretch. So spinning our subject today (although re-reading it, I guess I’m really NOT spinning it) I’m talking about TV characters I’m not supposed to like (but kind of do).

Some of these are not exactly “fitting,” and some do. The subject is “unlikable characters” we still love. Some of these may have been written as such, but I’m also not sure they ARE supposed to be unlikable. Maybe it’s more my perception of opinion based on social media. Either way, we’re looking at the few characters I, last minute (again), could think of. Let’s do this.

TV CHARACTERS I’M NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE

LADY MARY CRAWLEY from DOWNTON ABBEY

I don’t think Lady Mary is universally disliked, but I know some people don’t care for her. I like her. I think, yes, she does have a harsh take sometimes. Yes she does learn some lessons, but overall, I think she does have goodness, too. Just takes longer to come out. I think also you have to consider the era and her British ancestry, and, in that time, there wasn’t a lot of “feelings” floating around. It was a lifestyle of duty and growing up without all the “best friend” parenting.

JANE DOE from BLINDSPOT

Ok, this one probably isn’t fair since I only saw season one episodes and who knows where her story will go. I like her as Jane, but the idea of not knowing her past and her “purpose” sets the viewer on edge. Is she really meant to work against the team? Are they bad? Is she one of the good guys? All of this and more is the question and I’ve also heard that the series finale isn’t really a fan favorite.

NATE FORD from LEVERAGE

I really do like Nate. But I’m not sure if this is how the writer’s wanted it? Or maybe they intend him to be a solid redemption arc which if so is the sign of solid writing because they accomplish this. Also, maybe this is part of the reason he’s not back in the revival is because not many like him? characters i’m not supposed to like

SIMON HARDWICK from BLOOD AND TREASURE

This is the character that sparked the list. Likely mostly because I just finished season two of the show. Simon is one of those characters who is definitely in everything only for himself, but at the same time, I appreciate his rare soft spot conscious moments for our heroes Lexi and Danny. I still dislike more than like him.

ADAM NOSHIMURI from HAWAII FIVE-0

Perhaps adding Adam is unfair since he does have quite the character arc and change. However I didn’t see him get much praise either. His character always intrigues me partially because we were on the edge wondering, does he redeem himself? I actually love how they continue to support him at H50 after the way Kono LEAVES and also that he confesses his sin rather than hide it from her. Goes against the grain and made me like him more.

MARY SHANNON from IN PLAIN SIGHT

I’m guessing whoever wrote Mary likes her, but I feel like she isn’t well liked during the run of the show on USA Network. Honestly, yes, Mary is flawed. But just because she takes the harsh, truthful approach to her relationship with her sister doesn’t mean she’s wrong.

EMILY THORNE from REVENGE

Honestly, what I saw of her (season one… and maybe two?), I don’t love this character, but I like her well enough. Any thoughts I have on her are based on only those seasons. Plus, honestly, she’s like the villain of her own story and most of this is of her own making and the choices she makes. The girl is super manipulative too.

Which of these characters do you like or loathe? What characters do you place in this category? Comment all your comments below. Let’s converse.

  1. Ooooh I love Emily Thorne! She is an awesome character!! And Lady Mary, hmmm …. I think I’ll be weary of her in person. She can be rather condescending, but she and Elza will probably get on very well. LOL!!

    Great choices today!

    1. Thanks so much for being here – and as always! Apologies (to everyone here) that I haven’t replied before now. Emily is one I liked when I was watching the show. I haven’t finished it yet though but think I would like to. Someday..! :)

    1. It was good. I know lots of viewers didn’t love the show. I enjoyed it as easy (albiet sometimes dramatic) TV watching. :) Thanks so much for visiting, Emily! Apologies for the delay to reply.

  2. Simon Hardwick was an interesting character in the first season. Loved the reveal of who he really was! We still need to watch the second season.

    1. Hope you enjoy S2. My thoughts on him are more from this second season since I don’t even really remember everything from the first year. ;) For some reason I kind of like him. Not in a I’ll only root for him kind of way, but more he does seem to have some sort of “soft spot” for Lexi and Danny and I appreciate that. :) Thanks for being here, Angela! As always.

    1. Oh, no! I was intrigued after seeing episode one of “Blindspot,” and I think I did watch a few more too. However I haven’t finished it but it’s always sad when a show doesn’t stay the same or get better as it moves along. :/ Thanks so much for visiting, Deann! Grateful.

  3. I’ve only watched Downton Abbey of these shows and I can’t remember feeling one way or another about Mary, she was fine, I didn’t hate her but she wasn’t my favourite character either. It was Edith who I really couldn’t stand especially in the latter seasons!

    1. Lots don’t care for Mary. I like her and loved how deeply she came to love Matthew. :) I feel like Edith always gets the sympathy because of Mary’s digs at her, but she’s not spotless either so I get your dislike of her. :) Thanks for visiting, Jo!

    1. I’m not even sure I finished season one of “Blindspot.” I’m trying to remember and just cannot. But someday I should go back and re-watch to see how much I remember. We’ll see…! Either way, I don’t doubt the disbelief aspect. Shows love to ask this of viewers. ;) Thanks for visiting, Pam!

    1. Good to know!! I feel like I need to go back and either re-watch or try to figure out where I stopped. I do remember I loved some of the scenes between she and the main dude. :) Thanks for visiting, Anita.

    1. Emily is one of those I got mad with sometimes… but ultimately I did mostly like her. At least up until the last show I watched. I haven’t finished the show yet. :)

  4. We loved Leverage and I really liked In Plain Sight. We recently watched Scorpion and I would add Walter O’Brien to your list. We really enjoyed the beginning of the series but hated the way it ended.

    1. Nooo! I’m so sad about the end of “Scorpion.” I haven’t seen it yet but loved the early seasons I did watch. I wonder if the writer’s knew it was going to end? If so, shame on them for not writing a fan favorite end. When something ends, those are always the best. :)

      1. Rissi, they were slated for the 5th season but the viewer ratings went down and I understand why. It’s too bad they didn’t get the chance to do it, it might have redeemed the show.

        1. I haven’t seen it. But agree. If they had a fifth season in the plans, there was more story to tell. Always sad when they have to end in a less than positive way.
