BEST OF 2022 AT THE BOX OFFICE AND ON THE SMALL SCREEN

by

Back at it with annual content. This go round it’s all about what I discovered, loved and enjoyed as favorite movies of 2022 at the box office, and of course, on the small screen too. Usually this is a whole big affair considering we make this into two parts, which is one part books and one part screen.

That said, we all know I haven’t been reading for a couple of reasons for the past year and beyond. One being I’ve learned some things that just didn’t sit well with me, and while this should in no way affect my enjoyment of reading, for some reason, compacted with everything else, it did. Still, I do love books yet, I just haven’t actively picked up books again though I know at some point I will. In the meantime, we have some movies and TV shows to discuss.

It’s safe to say, I’m not liking most of the Marvel stories anymore which makes me sad. But if social media conversation is any indication, this isn’t a just me scenario. So this leaves me with other possible movies to enjoy. Our subject right now is to share some of the favorite screen stories I enjoyed. Let’s discover them all.

FAVORITE MOVIES OF 2022

THE ADAM PROJECT

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Probably the first Netflix original I saw this year, this one is just fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the cast and the plot too has this cool adventure aspect that’s crazy easy to be caught up in. Stream on Netflix

DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Perhaps adding this is more about nostalgia, but I do genuinely think the production quality is still up to par. Some actors say they’re done with the franchise, which likely will please many people, but if ever there were to be another film, I would definitely like to see a return of Mary’s happiness rather than the place she’s in at the end of ‘A New Era.’ Overall though, the film is lovely and another good addition to this world.

ENOLA HOLMES 2

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I did have a small issue or two with this one where perhaps I didn’t with Enola Holmes, but I was glad most of the cast returned and still found much to enjoy about this film starring Sherlock Holmes sister. Stream on Netflix

THE GRAY MAN

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Impressed with this one. Imperfect, yes. But better than I anticipated. Also, probably not for those that don’t care for thrillers and violence. Stream on Netflix

HELLO, GOODBYE AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Based on the novel by Jennifer L. Smith, this one was quite sweet and I enjoyed it. Stream on Netflix

JERRY & MARGE GO LARGE

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is perhaps the biggest “surprise” film I saw of the year. Just lots of fun in a feel-good kind of way. Stream with a Paramount+ subscription

THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Honestly if one film is a question mark for me on this list, it’s this. I did like it, but the morals aren’t all that good and yet I admire certain aspects of the film and did like it better than I thought maybe I would. Stream on Netflix

SHUT IN

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

This is, if memory serves me right, the very first film I watched from DW Entertainment. A film which debuted free on YouTube, I was actually pleasantly surprised. It features a solid cast and while it does drag in some places, the story is good and leans heavily into Christian influence. Watch exclusively with Daily Wire+

TICKET TO PARADISE

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This one is just good. Doesn’t seem to have an agenda and is instead focused on telling a story rather than promoting something. I loved it. I laughed. I want more of this.

TOP GUN (1986)

Rating: 3 out of 5.

An old film to put on a favorite movies of 2022 list, yes. But this is the first year I actually watched this one. Solid film that does lag a bit in places. Stream with a Paramount+ subscription

TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Finally watched this 30-some year later sequel, and let me just say, it’s good. Another film, like Ticket to Paradise, that focuses its energy on telling on story and while doing this, it manages to be inspiring and complementary to its predecessor, too. We all need that. Stream with a Paramount+ subscription

UNCHARTED

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If it comes down to it, Uncharted is WAY more fun than the other adventure film everyone loved this year. It’s just entertaining and features a solid, likable cast too. Plus I LOVE that it allows both competing sides (the guy vs the girl) to get the “one up.”

IN A “COPY + PASTE” SCENARIO What’d I Miss? I still haven’t seen 2019 titles like Five Feet Apart; The Sun is also a StarTolkienX-Men: Dark PhoenixYesterdayWhere’d You Go, Bernadette?2021 titles I didn’t see F9: The Fast SagaFree GuyGhostbusters: AfterlifeJungle CruiseSing 2Spider-Man: No Way HomeThe Tomorrow War (though I did start this one). What should I start with in 2023??

ON THE SMALL SCREEN

LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION

The re-boot of the original series, Leverage: Redemption is fun. Different than its origin series, but fun nonetheless. Pretty sure I also probably saw this in 2021, but my review is dated this year so we’re going with the flow. Stream on Freevee

MAGGIE

A one and done series, this one has its flaws but also had potential to be a cute romantic comedy show. It was mostly feel good and featured a cast playing likable characters. Stream on Hulu

THE MALLORCA FILES, SERIES ONE

A BritBox series, I watched season one of this police dramady and did enjoy it. It’s kind of like Castle but different and the settings are unmatched. Stream on BritBox

REACHER

Reacher, as a character, is kind of sad because he doesn’t ever really let people in and instead is more of a lonely soul. Makes me sad just because I believe we do need people in our lives. But of course as this is a fictional character, I can still enjoy this series. It’s gritty, but Prime does a good job with the series.

SIGNORA VOLPE

Beautiful scenery though not a show I finished watching. I enjoyed what I saw though and do hope to go in and finish the series, hopefully with the result of liking it.

THE SISTER BONIFACE MYSTERIES

Cute, easy watching, this BritBox series features a sassy nun whose love of forensics keeps her working with the local police on murder cases. Stream on BritBox

  1. Thanks for the recommendations! I saw Top Gun Maverick in theaters and enjoyed it, and saw part of Enola Holmes 2 while my teen watched it, but I still need to finish it. I’m going to watch either Uncharted or The Gray Man with my husband tonight, and I’ll catch the others on your list next week before I go back to work!
