‘WHEN I THINK OF CHRISTMAS’: SONGWRITERS REUNITE IN HOMETOWN

by

Putting out reunion romance stories isn’t a new concept but for the TV movie genre, it IS a popular one. This is what When I Think of Christmas plays into.

When I Think of Christmas (2022) Hallmark TV Film Review

Taking a break from her high profile career as an attorney is the plan for Sara Thompson (Shenae Grimes-Beech). At least this is what her mother (Beth Broderick) believes. In reality, Sara is bringing some work home and perhaps even some unresolved emotions from her career path. While home she may also rediscover something she thought she’d lost…

Visiting his hometown from Nashville, Josh (Niall Matter) is here to run the Christmas program for his uncle. Only putting together a group of talent and finding the right musicians may be somewhat more difficult.

Almost like anything from networks that air Christmas movies, this 2022 title is all the same kind of hometown expressions and décor. This one has some added interest with its musical connection. I’m not always the greatest fan of stories that use music as a primary focus. This one I don’t mind especially since the music is pretty with classic and familiar songs. Perhaps it’s also because I like the actors.

Shenae has been a favorite since I saw her in a Hallmark mystery years ago and Niall Matter is a familiar favorite who my mom considers a favorite from the network. This doesn’t apply to the characters they respectively play. I like Sara and Josh, however I think the drama Sara brings up with her ex is a little unfair and overreaching. I relate to some of her perspective, and other aspects don’t work. I think this may be how the actor plays characters though too. She usually has a more aggressive persona which works for her lawyer character but is kind of brash in other ways.

What I do like about this reunion trope is that the “meet cute” is ordinary. It’s more adult rather than cute happenstance and while we always love the latter, sometime the ordinary and realistic is the relatable thing. The kiss offsets this somewhat with it’s caught-up-in-the-moment fairytale.

Despite the cons, When I Think of Christmas is still charming.
