POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY-ONE: THE NO-NEWS WEEK
Friday is here, and we’re back with our usual pop culture news-y roundup. pop culture news one hundred and thirty-one
Slim pickings is the rule this week considering we really had to look for any story this week. The stories were just not there, even to the point of saying, it probably would have been wiser to skip out. Still, we go ahead with our research and found a rare few stories.
POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and THIRTY-ONE
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway remembers a time, after her Oscar win for Les Miserables, when social media didn’t like her. Seems odd considering she was an American darling after The Princess Diaries. She told the publication that she lost roles because there was concern “about how toxic my identity had become online.” She went on to remember Christopher Nolan giving her a role in Interstellar, and how important that role was for her and her career to move forward. She went on to say that looking back this can be empowering and she says “when the bad shit happens, don’t fear it — just go with it, flow with it.”

Of course, the prevailing story of the week, which broke after we published last week is the announcement from Catherine, Princess of Wales. You can watch the video on their official Instagram page, but really, what gets me is the rampant social media “theories” prior to this announcement. I don’t care what public figure they are, we don’t have the “right” to automatically know everything about their lives. They deserve some privacy, if they choose it, just as we sometimes want privacy when going through something terrible. But even after this announcement, and the ridiculous things people said on social media beforehand, I’m still seeing headlines about her and what “body language experts” say about her video. Even as someone who isn’t a fan of the royals, I find it all distasteful. Shame on us, and our inability to to use wisdom in how we use social media.
The other big story is the Quiet on Set documentary. The documentary chronicles the mistreatment of child stars, many of whom were Nickelodeon stars. The main actor making headlines is Drake Bell, who once starred in Drake and Josh. Other stars too have come forward sharing their experience; everything from lewd acts they had to perform on or for the adults on set to feeling uncomfortable with certain things (like a kiss with an older co-star) asked of them for a scene.
Finally, on March 31, the cult classic 10 Things I Hate About You will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. We celebrated with a quiz and took a look at cute moments between Kat and Patrick, too!
