WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT BARBIE + KEN

If you grew up loving the world of Mattel’s Barbie and her boyfriend, Ken (who is now her ex?), then you’re probably a millennial super excited for an upcoming movie. Here’s some quick things we know about Barbie, which everyone is talking about and meme-ing this week.

+ The (second) trailer is here! I didn’t watch it because I’ve been enjoying not seeing trailers way more than seeing them.

+ The film, headed up by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling opens July 21.

+ The cast additionally includes Will Ferrell; America Ferrera; Helen Mirren;

+ Little Women (2019) director Greta Gerwig directs.

+ This one doesn’t have much to share (written) for plot but does tease that living in Barbie land is perfect unless you have a “full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.” Seems like Barbie may be having a bit of a crisis coming this summer!

MORE NEWS

Fans of Emily Henry novels, an author who writes contemporary fiction mostly for female audiences, will like to know that Beach Read is getting an adaptation.

Netflix’s Sex/Life and Fox’s The Resident have been officially cancelled leading fans to wonder which of their shows awaiting renewal will return on a streamer or to the fall schedule.

A live action remake is in the works, a mere seven years after its animated version’s release, of Moana. The film would feature Dwayne Johnson, who voiced one of the characters. What are your thoughts on this? I saw someone on Instagram make the point that this seems “lazy” of Disney at this point given it’s less than ten years old. There’s a difference between remaking The Little Mermaid and this where the former can add more to its story and Moana should still be quite relevant with its story. Cannot say I disagree.

Speaking of Disney, their upcoming The Little Mermaid film continues to rack up criticism. First for the dark hues the film appears to be adopting and then for removing lyrics from original songs. These songs include ‘Kiss the Girl.’ The idea behind it is to allow for “consent.” Honestly, did anyone grow up thinking Eric was taking advantage of Ariel in that scene? I didn’t and really it’s a fun and sweet scene with Sebastian heading things up and the song being a sweet experience that clearly Ariel too is enjoying in the moment. Just seems a little odd to me and as if the producers are looking for challenges where there doesn’t need to be. But whatever! At this rate, the only thing going for this one may be that it has an impressive and name recognized cast. Also though it’s “old news,” I’m writing about this.

Netflix is continuing to grow, this time into TV land. While the streamer has acquired rights to several exclusive TV shows like Virgin River or the short lived Country Comfort, they are now going to try their hand at producing or developing shows. The first of which seems to be a single camera comedy (probably with a half-hour format) featuring Samara Weaving (from The Valet). Titled Little Sky, the pilot follows Weaving, a woman determined to realize her dream of being an on air reporter. The article also states that this doesn’t necessarily mean the streamer will long-term be trying to develop pilots.

Which of these things did you read about? Did any strike you as funny or strange? Which ones will you or have you followed? Comment all the comments. Let’s chat.

    1. I know EXACTLY what you mean, Molly! I have this feeling too. I feel that way about “Mulan” (the animated movie) in some ways because it was a “new” Disney movie when I was a kid and it had a milestone birthday a while back so I feel VERY old. ;)
