‘CANNES CONFIDENTIAL’: A SLEEK CRIME DRAMA FROM ACORN TV
A new Acorn TV show, Cannes Confidential is a mixture of more than one crime drama. In this way, it’s a little conflicting, but in others, it’s a decent premise.
Cannes Confidential (2023) Acorn TV Series Review
Tough and determined, Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) is good at her job. She’s a detective connected to someone with a past some want to leverage against her. Her partner Lea (Shy’m) is loyal and has more than being the person entrusted with her safety in mind. When the murder of a street artist and the brother of her schoolmate introduces her to the enigmatic Harry King (Jamie Bamber), things get complicated.
As Camille and Harry continue to run into one another throughout the investigation and when Camille learns he may not be who he seems, she takes offense. Problem is, she cannot do anything for fear of losing out on uncovering the secrets of her father’s curious legal trouble.

🌴‘CANNES CONFIDENTIAL’: A SLEEK CRIME DRAMA FROM ACORN TV🌴 A review of the recent Acorn TV crime drama with Jamie Bamber. #TVShow #TVReview #TVShowReviews Share on XOne of the new TV shows I had a chance to see, Cannes Confidential is different but the same compared to what I’d usually watch. Described as a “high-concept detective series centered on [a] bicker-banter relationship,” this would lead us to believe there’s mostly fun. Its basic premise is a kind of Castle lite if you’re familiar with the former ABC American TV drama. This leans, overall, heavier into the darker side of things but the setting offsets this. I think, based on first impressions alone, this is one of those shows that’s not quite sure what it is. In one scene it’s having fun and playing up the banter between characters. Then in another, it’s almost “sinister” in that we realize the characters may have these unexpected darker sides. This is what surprises me.
What I like is seeing Jamie Bamber in something new. As a fan of his from way back in the days of the A&E drama Horatio Hornblower, this is fun. Some may also recognize him from a brief episode run on the CBS drama NCIS. The rest of the cast is unfamiliar to me, but they’re good. What I enjoy following best is the interactions between Camille and Harry. They’re simultaneously all banter and have an edge that will cause us to put our guard up, questioning, are these people good or bad?
For the most part, I did enjoy this latest original on Acorn TV. It’s entertaining and builds an ongoing story threading between the case-by-case formula. All of which is backed by a pretty location. If you like things like The Mallorca Files, Castle or any kind of partner detective duo, this might be something work giving a chance.
You can buy season one of Cannes Confidential with an Acorn TV subscription. The show drops today with its first episode.

Content: the show deals with murder so we do see various murders. None are terribly graphic (at least not in the episodes I did see). There is some threats and this underlying question of the morals of characters. There are prominent characters who are homosexual and/or bi-sexual if that bothers you, talk of affairs; and at least one same sex kiss. Uses of the F-word sprinkle throughout the six-episode run. The show is TV-MA. Note: this is all based on the first episode.
