When most people think of mermaid flicks, probably many of us instantly think of the Disney classic. While that one is indeed fun and good and entertaining, there’s others that fit this mold too. Some I haven’t seen and some I have, so let’s discover the ten mermaid movies you can add to your late summer watchlist, even if it is as a re-watch.

TEN MERMAID MOVIES to PUT on your WATCHLIST

AQUAMARINE

A movie that’s really ideal for pre-teen girls, this one has a young Emma Roberts co-starring with JoJo in a story about best friends who discover and try to hide a mythical mermaid, played by Sara Paxton. The film is cute in beach-y summer kind of way and is ideal for the younger age group, unless you aren’t wild about the β€œcrush” trope in movies.

FISHTALES

One of those TV films that aired on Freeform back when it was ABC Family (or somewhere like that), this one isn’t impressive if you want something with a more serious story (follows a girl who tries to match-make her father), but it’d be cute if you just want something silly.

THE KING’S DAUGHTER

A fantasy film, this one is about a king who wants immortality and so he finds a mermaid believing she’ll give him this.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989)

The classic version many of us probably know best, this is the animated film from Disney featuring Jody Benson as the voice of Ariel, the stubborn girl who wanted to live on land.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (2018)

William Moseley, of Chronicles of Narnia fame, stars in this film as a reporter who, along with his niece, discovers a woman they believe to be a mythical sea creature. A bittersweet film, this is a period drama and features a decent cast in spite of the lower budget.

THE LITTLE MERMAID (2023)

This one had all sorts of controversy, and I haven’t even seen it yet, but it deserves a spot here and I’ve heard that it’s a fun movie. The film is a live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 animated film and features the usual beloved characters from Ariel and Eric, to the faithful Sebastian.

A MERMAID IN PARIS

A French film, this follows a lonely man who rescues a mermaid and then falls in love with her.

SABRINA DOWN UNDER

In this TV film, the Sabrina Spellman story continues when Sabrina, made popular by the TV show and Melissa Joan Hart’s portrayal of the teen witch, heads to Australia when she meets a cute merman.

SCALES: MERMAIDS ARE REAL

I’ve never heard of this one, but is has good ratings and the PG-plot sounds cute. It follows a girl who comes to realize she’s destined to become a mermaid on her next birthday.

SPLASH

Tom Hanks features in this film from the 80s about a man who finds love with a woman, little realizing who she is or the connection they share.

MORE TITLES

these aren’t all exclusively about mermaids, but they do keep cropping up in my search for all the (mostly) fun mermaid movies, so we’re adding them. just because.

LITTLE MERMAID II: RETURN TO THE SEA Disney produced an animated sequel; I haven’t seen if in years, but I mean, it’s cute

A MERMAID’S TALE featuring Jerry O’ Connell, this one tells the story of a young girl who befriends a mermaid.

PAN never did see this one but it has an impressive cast if not impressive critical reviews

PETER PAN (2003) a popular title and while I’ve seen it, I don’t remember it much, but there’s mermaids?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGERS TIDES heavily uses mermaid lore.

Which of these titles have you seen? Do you recommend any? Or loathe any? Which ones do you re-watch? Do you like the Little Mermaid fairy tale? Comment all the things below. Let’s meet in the comment section.

  1. I would add a couple of classics to your list:

The Glass Bottom Boat – Though she isn’t an actual mermaid, the film opens with Doris Day playing a mermaid which leads to my favorite on screen meet cute that is then carried forward in some jokes later on in the movie.

Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid – This one is harder find, but stars William Powell as a married man who rescues a mermaid while on vacation.

    1. Thank you!! I’m glad to know about more as I feel like there probably IS more out there. Trouble is, I try never to use other lists (like this) as a way to “research” so I have to look other places like on databases where you can search keywords, etc. I think Mr. Peabody did pop up but then I forgot to add it. And any of the Doris Day films I’ve seen are so fun. :)

    1. I’ve seen Aquamarine several times too, Carline. I think, in fact, I watched it again for nostalgia a few years ago and it was fun just to relive that. Also, yes. Cannot beat that classic Little Mermaid story! :)
