THE SPOOKY (BUT NOT REALLY) BOOKS ON MY SHELF

Each year we put together a kind of “spooky” book list but since I’m not a scary story or movie kind of girl, they actually aren’t really spooky. At least my perception of the book is that it’s not spooky. This I say since I haven’t read many or any of the titles we’re featuring this year.

Like I said, we’ve done this for many years in the past, including 2020, 2021 and 2022. There may be repeats but I always do try to find some new titles on my bookshelf that fit or apply to this topic. We have our trusty sticky not waiting to assist me in the titles we add so let’s share them and get straight to our list for the day.

SPOOKY BOOK LIST

DEADLY CURIOUS, CINDY ANTSEY

I read a Christmas novel by this author and thought it was immense fun. Stands to reason other of her books would be too. Goodreads

THORNWICKE, CHARITY BISHOP

I don’t think Charity’s books are “spooky” per se, but they do have supernatural elements or some of them do. Thornwicke is the first in what she calls the Enchanters series, and while I don’t think it has the plot that interests me most of the series, it is book one. Goodreads

A SECRET PRINCESS, MELISSA DE LA CRUZ and MARGARET STOHL

With this being a Little Princess and Secret Garden re-telling and mash up, I had to include the book just because it could have some kind of atmospheric qualities that fit nice with autumn reading. Goodreads

HANSEL and GRETEL, JENNI JAMES

A self-published (I think?) retelling of the classic fairy tale, I’ve had this on a shelf in my closet for a long time. Goodreads spooky book list

NANCY DREW, CAROLYN KEENE

More cozy mystery genre than spooky, I suspect some of Nancy’s cases are a bit spookier than others. Goodreads

JUNIPER BEAN RESORTS TO MURDER, GRACIE RUTH MITCHELL

Much like Nancy Drew’s sleuthing, this one sounds more cozy mystery than anything, and that is my kind of read. Goodreads

IN THE HALL WITH THE KNIFE, DIANA PETERFREUND

Very possible that I already included this one on a list such as this from the past. I stumbled on this book accidentally (though I don’t remember how) and had to get it. Yet here we are, and still I haven’t. The promise of a Clue-esque mystery was too good to pass by. Goodreads

GHOSTED, AMANDA QUAIN

A re-telling (probably loose) of Northanger Abbey, Ghosted is a novel that sure sounds like it would be fun! Goodreads

Have you read any of our features today? Which ones do you recommend? Which ones would you put on a spooky book list? Are you a spooky lover of fiction or do you prefer less spook? Comment all of the things below. Let’s talk.

    1. I need to read a Nancy Drew book. I think I read one or two of the modern re-releases and Trixie Belden, too, but I never read these original books. My cousin LOVED them though so we gave her a lot as gifts. :)

  1. Awesome list! I’ve had In the Hall with a Knife on my shelves for SO LONG…I really need to make it a point to read that one soon.

Happy Halloween to you! Here’s my TTT–https://betwixtthesepages.wordpress.com/2023/10/31/top-ten-tuesday-54/

    1. I should read that one or one of the original books someday, Nicole. I think all I read was the re-release modern books. But I would be curious to read some of these. :)

    1. I loved Jo & Laurie by this duo so I’m hoping “A Secret Princess” is good. And isn’t the cover pretty for Thornwicke?! I hear great things about the author too and based on other things I’ve read by her, it’s bound to be a well written novel. :)

    1. Right? I sometimes feel like I should re-read things too and see if they hold up. It seems like it’d be a fun thing… but then sometimes I don’t want to in case it “ruins” my good memory of the story. ;)
