CELEBRATING SOME OF OUR FAVORITE GRANDPARENT FILM and TV CHARACTERS

On this national grandparent’s day, we are poised and ready to celebrate some of our favorite grandparent film and TV characters. This because we really don’t celebrate them often or perhaps enough. Our list is really made up of wildly different grandparents. Some have sage advice and are also there with a warm hug. Others are a little more “rub some dirt on it” kind of grandparent, but what they have in common is love for the people in their life, even if it looks different.

As I’m writing this, I only have about three names in mind which does not make a quality list. As we put this together though, the hope is we’ll find more names and more characters to feature because sometimes it’s fun to feature characters that aren’t on the normal lists we curate. Let’s discover who these patriarch and matriarch characters are.

FAVORITE GRANDPARENT FILM and TV CHARACTERS

GEORGE BANKS from FATHER OF THE BRIDE: PART II

We don’t really see George as a grandfather, but knowing his love of his daughter Annie, and seeing that in action, what we do know is he’ll be a great one.

MIKE BAXTER from LAST MAN STANDING

I tend to think of Mike more as a father than grandfather, but he is, both. And I do love his character since most TV parents are either the “exhausted” or “let’s give up” characters, whereas he’s more of a no-nonsense parent. Even at this, when it’s required, he does know how to say the right thing to help a daughter or grandson through a challenge.

BURT and VIRGINA CHANCE from RAISING HOPE

These two are probably then oddest on the last, and I don’t count them as wise in the way the rest of these tend to be. But they are fun and for this I have to include them. grandparent film and tv characters

QUEEN CLARISSE from THE PRINCESS DIARIES

Not only is this character played by Julie Andrews, but also she’s just cool. She’s classy and knows how to be a lady (why is this so taboo now?) but just as she teaches her granddaughter Mia manners, she also does know how to have a fun day with Mia, too.

VIOLET CRAWLEY from DOWNTON ABBEY

Violet is just iconic. There’s now much else to say about the Crawley matriarch.

JOCELYN DASHWOOD from WHAT A GIRL WANTS

Eileen Atkins plays grandmother to Amanda Bynes character in this delightful comedy. Their relationship also has a nice arc even if it’s not primary.

EMILY and RICHARD GLIMORE from GILMORE GIRLS

Despite her “harsh” personality, we still love Emily Gilmore. She’s not totally right and daughter, Lorelai isn’t totally right in the “reasoning” for their tenuous relationship. In fact, I’m pretty sure Emily, most of the time, has better judgement than her daughter, and later one, even granddaughter Rory. And we just love Richard just because of him.

HENRY REAGAN from BLUE BLOODS

Henry doesn’t get much screen time by comparison but I do love his character and while I don’t always agree with him, I like that this family still comes together even if they debate.

REBA from REBA

A mom with young kids who learns her husband has been unfaithful and she’s going to be a grandmother within a short period of time, this is one of those TV sitcoms that ran on the (now) CW network. I binged it a a while back and it was cute.

THE WALTONS from THE WALTONS

These two are consistent sources of advice for their seven grandchildren.

Have you seen any of these shows? Which of these grandparent film and TV characters are your favorites? Which ones did we neglect? Share all of your thoughts. Let’s meet up in the comments.
