‘UNDER THE CHRISTMAS SKY’: A MOVIE THAT REACHES FOR THE STARS

Full of normal elements (including way too many Christmas trees!), Under the Christmas Sky still happens to be unique, too.

Under the Christmas Sky (2023) Hallmark TV Film Review

Her career has been a dream for Kat (Jessica Parker Kennedy) as long as she can remember. When an accident leaves her vision damaged, Kat is unable to continue her research and work as an astronaut. With encouragement from her annoying (but loved) little brother (Andrew Bushell), Kat takes a job at the planetarium as a consultant working on an exhibit. Meeting the curator, David Robinson (Ryan Paevey) challenges her. Feeling as though his inability to be creative, which is what his boss is looking for, will harm the good work he does. But perhaps Kat’s arrival just may help him learn how to find pieces of creativity.

Though the décor is way over the top (how many trees can one small space in a home hold?), Under the Christmas Sky is sweet. It’s full of cheerful antidotes and characters who focus on good and work hard to accomplish goals rather than focus on any limitation. And when they do linger on a limitation, someone is quick to help them regain the passion they have for life.

Familiar leading man Ryan Paevey is good, as usual, in the role. He tends to play the more stalwart heroes, but he does it well, so honestly, no one minds. I don’t love Jessica and Ryan together in an oh-my-goodness-they’re-so-memorable kind of way, but they also have some sweet and cute moments that aren’t to be missed. The supporting cast, in particular Andy and his subplot, are fabulous fun.

Though it’s not as unique as some of the 2023 titles I’ve seen, this film is lots of fun. Plus, this one gets bonus points for having a skating rink scene minus it being ice skating.

Content: there’s nothing to mention here outside of a kiss or two, and some more serious issues regarding health (nothing too heavy). The film is TV-G.
