POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and TWENTY

ENTERTAINMENT layoffs

There has been a round of exec layoffs at Amazon. According to one article, the Amazon Studios / MGM+ layoffs are “part of a review of its business” and a “source” calls these cutbacks a “bloodbath.” Additionally, following this, Great American Family and Hallmark too went through a round of layoffs. Great American Family is cutting these exec jobs “On the heels of a highly successful year” and has plans in the New Year to launch their own mystery franchises, likely similar to Hallmark. This change is, according to a statement from the company, “taking steps to focus on our strengths.” Hallmark meanwhile had, according to what a source calls had “major cutbacks” that is said to “strengthen our focus.” However the article says that they don’t see the layoffs as major.

LEROY JETHRO GIBBS RETURNS

Right after we published last week’s Pop Culture News, the story broke that the NCIS franchise, CBS’ favorite drama, will expand. (Again.) This time with a 90s-set prequel that will follow one of its top agents, Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Played by Mark Harmon, the character of course led a team on the original NCIS show for years, recently leaving the role in the last 2 seasons. Harmon’s son, Sean, also played a younger Gibbs in select episodes of NCIS. Both Mark and Sean will produce, while there will be a casting process to cast a young Gibbs, and additionally, a younger version of Mike Franks, the Gibbs mentor played by Muse Watson in NCIS. While I will give this a chance, I’m not a big fan of prequel series, so we’ll see how it all goes down!

MORE MAVERICK

Rumor has it, there’s a penning of a script for a third installment in the Top Gun franchise. This comes days after Tom Cruise made a deal with Paramount, a frequent partner of his, to star in and produce films with them. This third film would bring back Cruise plus his Top Gun 2 co-stars Glen Powell and Miles Teller. Despite news just breaking, story says it’s been in development since last autumn.

MORE stories

ABC is ending The Good Doctor. The upcoming seventh season will be the shows last.

Host of the Golden Globes, Jo Koy (and I don’t even know who this is) has come under criticism for his hosting duties and the jokes he made, including one about Taylor Swift and the NFL. The jokes, according to articles, didn’t go well. I didn’t watch the show or clips, so I don’t have an opinion, but will say, depending on the joke, as a public figure, Swift (or anyone) shouldn’t be excluded from being part of a joke.

We mentioned Great American Family earlier, and in February, the network will debut its first original show with County Rescue. Likely a show that you could liken to Chicago Fire only this will be family friendly. The first season will consist of five episodes, following a woman training to be an EMT and competing for one of three positions on a team.

According to more than one article, The Gilded Age, the HBO drama from Julian Fellowes, receiving a SAG award nomination is quite unusual. The series is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Following his serious accident, Jeremy Renner has returned to work. He’s filming season three of Mayor of Kingstown. pop culture news one hundred and twenty

The Blake Lively led adaptation of It ends with Us will now open in June, moving from February. The film is based on the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name.
