POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and TWENTY-THREE

BARBIE FOLLOW-UP

Following up last week’s Barbie controversy surrounding no Oscar nomination for Margot Robbie as best actress or best director for Greta Gerwig, Robbie responds during a SAG panel. Her comments, which in part said the following, There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed…” are very classy and accurate. While she can feel sad over losing a nomination, and she also credits Gerwig with deserving a nod that she didn’t get, this film, including best picture, did get nominations and as she further says, “We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that…” Right she is, and I appreciate her reasoned response.

LAST THINGS

In Hallmark news, Cameron Mathison won’t appear in the next mystery with Alison Sweeney’s Hannah Swenson character. The reason why is to “stay true to the book” according to Hallmark. The films are inspired by Joanne Fluke’s novels. According to one article another supposition too is that Mathison has worked on Great American Family and therefore won’t work with Hallmark again. If this is true, I suspect this is more on the part of Hallmark than the actor, but time will tell.

NBC has ordered an offshoot pilot for the hit Suits which will be titled Suits: L.A. and follow a new character according to the synopsis. The plot reads that we’ll meet “Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York who “has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.” The pilot will shoot in March.

The much buzzed about Amazon Prime Mr. and Mrs. Smith dropped yesterday, the first on Prime. Inspired by the famous film with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this one will tell its own story even with a similar premise. At least that’s what I understand. Will you tune in to watch the TV-MA show?

According to news articles, NCIS is ready to film its “overall” 1,000th episode and according to CBS’ Entertainment Chief, Amy Reisenbach, she doesn’t see the show “slowing down” anytime soon. In the same news story, she said news would come soon about a possible season two of NCIS: Sydney and that CBS was thrilled with how well its freshman season did. NCIS (the original) will finally return for its shortened 21st season on February 12.

Also in NCIS news, on February 19, the show will pay tribute to the passing of David McCallum with cast member Brian Dietzen writing the script. The episode will show “As NCIS mourns the loss of Ducky, the agents find comfort in working on one of his unfinished cases involving a woman whose father was dishonorably discharged from the Marines.” No word on if they’ll be cameos, but there is a teaser in a statement from showrunners saying “There will also be a very touching and special moment you won’t want to miss.”

Netflix won’t be bringing back their hit shows like Wednesday, Sweet Magnolias or Virgin River, or the final eason of Stranger Things until 2025, largely due to the writer’s strike.

Acorn’s Whitstable Pearl will return for a third season. Based on a series of novels and starring Kerry Godliman, based on the first two seasons, the series is quite good with complexities, and is yet another show that proves the U.K knows how to do mystery.

Reba McEntire will lead an upcoming NBC sitcom which will be written and produced by former Reba (a WB sitcom) veteran Kevin Abbott. The show will follow Reba’s character as she inherits her father’s restaurant and ends up with a business partner she’d rather not have, a half-sister.
