REVIEW: Lynn Painter is one of the more recent authors to receive reader love. I find her books on many book lists, and they have high ratings on Amazon. The Do-Over is a charming novel that centers on Valentine’s Day, which means this is the ideal book to feature and read this week.

The book is quite fun though won’t suit anyone who prefers the tag of the much-debated “clean” (profanity is the offender) read. Repeat day stories usually aren’t my favorite just because no matter how much a storyteller tries to make it different or add some unique changes, oftentimes I still find the plot feels like a “copy and paste” kind of story. Regardless, I did enjoy The Do-Over. The promposal scene is darling for starters and her “don’t care” day adds more interest and new experience or scenes.

But then Em is a heroine who isn’t instantly lovable just because she has some annoying habits. At the same time, we do have to cut her some slack because reliving the same day over and over would be frustrating.

“A wardrobe selection made wholly out of poutiness.”

By the end of the novel, we like her better and appreciate that we finally see Em reach the end of her repeat day, and walk forward into a new day with a future that looks different than what she had on her perfect checklist. It’s the best gift The Do-Over can give its reader.

Content: There are several uses of the f-work (multiple, but not obsessively annoying) and “WTF.” Shit and hell are both used multiple times. There is some innuendo and suggestive remarks (aka flirting); and there is one each descriptive make out scene between a heterosexual and same sex couple.
