MEMORABLE PROPOSAL SCENES from FILM and TV SHOWS

When it comes to scenes from film or TV shows, I suspect there are some that stand out for each of us. Some are funny and just that memorable but they’re actually funny. Then there are those that make us cry. This list is going in a more romantic direction and features memorable proposal scenes for the March 20th National Proposal Day. Also, who knew there was such a day?

Since there is such a day, or there is according to the “funny” holiday websites, we are going to have to wrack our brains. This is because while we do know we have some memorable proposal scenes, we also will have to search our movie memory for what they are. Let’s get our keyboard ready and see what scenes we can discover that fit neatly with today’s list.

Before we begin, I’m adding an I-really-don’t-want-to-add-this-disclaimer. This isn’t a list that will be only the “best” proposal scenes or the scenes that come with films with only the highest morals. Instead, this list is for fun and entertainment purposes featuring scenes from culturally popular and favorite film that, generally, make us swoon and oftentimes giggle, too.

MEMORABLE PROPOSAL SCENES from FILM and TV SHOWS

there will be spoilers below

ALBERT and VICTORIA from VICTORIA (ITV)

Soft and pretty, and all the appropriate romantic things, looking back at my recap of this episode, I found it one of the prettiest proposal scenes on TV.

ANDREW and MARGARET from THE PROPOSAL

Is there a better film to feature than this on this proposal day list? I don’t think so! The scene when Margaret proposes is quite funny, but I think more memorable is when Andrew finds Margaret again, and asks her to marry him because he’d quite like to “date her.” It’s more on the romantic side than the first proposal, but also just really simple and sweet while still being that final romantic gesture moviegoers of this genre love.

DARCY and ELIZABETH from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

It feels wrong not to include something Jane Austen. This is why we’re including Elizabeth and Darcy. However, we’re not including that scene, though it is lovely, but rather the rejection scene. You see, while the scene in the 2005 film doesn’t end happily for Darcy, I do think the moment stands out and is memorable. I like the intensity that Kiera Knightley plays the scene with, the almost way Darcy kisses her regardless, and that there is rain. I think it adds some drama while also being a metaphor for how the proposal is going to go. Plus, I respect that it’s Austen (the language) but also its own scene and so very different from the 1995 miniseries.

DECLAN and ANNA from LEAP YEAR

Is this scene perfect? Nope. But I like that it’s different and somehow fun, while also appreciating that there is a culture clash in how I may think of a “proper” proposal. In the end, I find it more cute than annoying.

GILBERT and ANNE from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

How can anyone not love this simple scene? The whole “I don’t need marble halls… I just need you” bit? Well, it’s just lovely, and I think subtlety, the scene also shows how these two have changed through the years.

HENRY and DANIELLE from EVER AFTER

These two! They’re fun and enjoy adventure together and the company of each other, too. This proposal isn’t too shabby either.

IKE and MAGGIE from RUNAWAY BRIDE

When Maggie proposes to Ike, it’s quite sweet and I love how emotional and sincerely Julia Robert’s plays the scene. Plus for its filmmaking era, the scene is unusual which makes it more fun.

JOE and HELEN from WINGS

Memorable, again, because of how unusual it is. It’s not even face to face! I just love how different this scene is. It begins with Joe going after Helen, who is about to marry someone else, and finding her in the apartment building when she asks him to give her a reason to not go ahead with her marriage, he asks her to marry him. An elevator door separates them here, but it’s still cute and I love the heartfelt speech Joe gives when Helen finally gives him a chance to say his piece.

KNIGHTLY and EMMA from EMMA

How can we not adore Knightley’s if I loved you less romantic declaration and proposal. The question that remains is, which version do you adore best?

LIV and DANIEL from BRIDE WARS

This isn’t an epic movie, but this scene is cute. It starts funny with Liv marching into Daniel’s office, furious he hasn’t proposed, only for her to ruin his grand gesture surprise. I am a little annoyed with her for doing this, but find how he rolls with it all cute.

LORD GORING and MABEL from AN IDEAL HUSBAND

This scene is a million kinds of cute. Need we say more? No we don’t need to (the scene speaks for itself), but we will. Minnie Driver plays the scene with sass and Rupert Everett with coolness that somehow is still wildly charming and romantic. Also, Driver’s dialogue is so cute and fun in this scene which is one that is built up throughout the entire film.

MARTIN DEEKS and KENSI BLY from NCIS: LA

We love a good proposal, but this NCIS show takes that up a notch with three of them!

MATTHEW and MARY from DOWNTON ABBEY

This one isn’t special in the sense of it being a “big” scene or some grand gesture, but it IS special for these two, and for the fans who waited years to see it. Plus, I adore that it’s an honest proposal with the pair going into marriage knowing each other’s secrets and past mistakes. The snow and the way Matthew loves Mary is what makes it sweet.

TRAVIS and GABBY from THE CHOICE

This scene and relationship will bother some because yes, it is one that starts before the inevitable break-up with someone else. BUT the proposal scene is cute and fun. It’s a he-pursues-her-proposal and it’s chaotic in a sweet way.
