‘TRACKER,’ SEASON ONE FIRST IMPRESSIONS REVIEW: JUSTIN HARTLEY’S NEW DRAMA

by

A new CBS show that had some hype and buzz long before finally making its debut. Featuring a TV star from a well-loved show, we have Tracker first impression review thoughts.

Tracker First Impression (2024) CBS TV Show Review

His unusual childhood has formed what is now the survivalist and solitary lifestyle of Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley). He travels the country as an expert tracker who traverses difficult terrain finding the lost people worried family members seek. He is a lone traveler who moves from place to place, but works with a tight group including computer expert Bob (Eric Graise), and Teddi (Robin Weigert), the only people he trusts to find him jobs and get him the research he needs. Then there is Reenie (Fiona Rene), the lawyer he has a history with who begrudgingly bails him out because while he’s not who she needs, he’s too dang interesting to ignore.

Colter’s latest case requires help from Reenie when the family of a missing child enlists his services.

This is a show that had some early buzz and then didn’t get its prime fall debut because of the industry halts. Part of this is because of the star stepping into the titular character’s footsteps. Justin Hartley prior to this played in NBC’s This is Us. So his follow-up, like that of his co-stars likely would be, was of particular interest. While not something I’m totally investing in, I do like Tacker. I think it has potential and is a show that gives viewers a concept more interesting than some while also being a variation on a crime drama.

The thing I’m liking most (and again, this is just first impressions) is Colter. I think his character is an asset to today’s characters. He stands apart. He still has emotional baggage (fairly so), but he also stands up and for things, and is more of a “hero” than I think I’ve met in recent years.tracker first impression

Unlike some shows, this one starts things off with a backstory that troubles Colter. The show explores the idea of a darker past with secrets which is what makes him into what he is today. Hartley carries a good deal of the show in terms of being the one actor who appears most through each episode. There’s guest stars but as a carry through character, he’s the one who keeps things congruent.

Its early days of course, but Tracker is interesting. I’m a little nervous because the backstory could become a little too overpowering and detract from the weekly cases, which is always where I found more interest. I think the cases should help draw out the backstory, not the backstory becoming the sole purpose. Whether this show will work into the former or the latter, I don’t know but so far, it’s off to a good start.

Content: there isn’t anything terrible to mention. There is discussion of cults and potential dangers. Some hand to hand combat crops up and characters brandish weapons as a means of threats. Someone receives a bullet wound. A couple has a one night stand and another same sex couple wakes up together, and they are (so far) a part of the show if that bothers you. The rating is TV-14. tracker first impression
