THE JANE AUSTEN INSPIRED BOOKS THAT YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO LOVE LESS

It seems like Jane Austen is enjoying popularity again. Or perhaps she also has. From the Hallmark Channel film block of titles inspired by her work, to modern re-tellings of her stories, there are countless creatives still inspired by the romance author from the 1800s. This is why I decided to take a look at the inspired by Jane Austen book re-tellings I have on my bookshelf. It just seems like it may be a grand time to feature Jane Austen inspired books because yes, I do love a good one.

The only actual Jane Austen novel I’ve read is Sense and Sensibility, and that was years ago. I had to “push” myself to read it which is odd because I love her stories as British productions. But I never made it through the other I started, which is Northanger Abbey, but I still want to give her books a chance again someday. Until then, it seems fun to look at the books I have on my shelf both by Austen, and the books that are inspired by her works. Let’s meet them all.

JANE AUSTEN INSPIRED BOOKS

THE CODE FOR LOVE AND HEARTBREAK, JILLIAN CANTOR

This one is inspired by Emma. It also has coding and technology things, so it promises to be a fun read. Goodreads

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND MISTLETOE, MELISSA DE LA CRUZ

Reviewers aren’t kind to this one on Goodreads. I did read this one a long time ago because Hallmark loosely adapted it, but I cannot remember if I enjoyed it or not. I think it was a so-so read for me. Goodreads

PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND OTHER FLAVORS, SONALI DEV

This is one I’ve had for a while and haven’t read. It’s a whole series too that is inspired by different of Austen’s novels. Goodreads

HEARTS, STRINGS AND OTHER BREAKABLE THINGS, JACQUELINE FIRKINS

This one is a Mansfield Park story (or inspired by) about a girl town between that childhood bestie and the new boy in her life who is something of a bad boy. Goodreads

AUSTENLAND, SHANNON HALE

Never did read the book that inspired the film with Keri Russell, but I do think the story is darling and own a copy, so many someday I will. Goodreads

JANE IN LOVE, RACHEL GIVNEY

This one is about Jane Austen and what choice she’d make if it would come down to her pen or true love. Goodreads

ATTEMPTING ELIZABETH, JESSICA GREY

Had this one on my shelf for way too long. It’s another of those stories where the heroine falls into the literal world of her favorite novel, which is Pride and Prejudice. Goodreads

PRIDE AND POPULARITY, JENNI JAMES

A young adult retelling of Pride and Prejudice, I used to think these would be fun reads. While they still might be, I think these will be books I unhaul next time I reorganize my shelves. If I haven’t made the time to read it yet, I probably won’t. Goodreads

SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY, MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL

This one says its Pride and Prejudice meets Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and is certainly one that intrigues me. But is it worth the read? Goodreads

EPIC FAIL, CLAIRE LAZEBNIK

This one has been on my shelf for an embarrassing number of years. I think the only reason I keep it is because it’s a loose Pride and Prejudice retelling and it’s one that I feel like I want to read. Goodreads

JANE OF AUSTIN, HILLARY MANTON LODGE

A contemporary Sense and Sensibility retelling about two sisters who operate a tea shop, I remember adoring this one when I read it. It’s been years now, but in my mind it remains a favorite. Goodreads

FIRST AND THEN, EMMA MILLS

This one is an interesting pitch which says it’s Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights. Also, has anyone read this one? It’s another I’ve had on my shelf for a long time and I’m way past the point of keeping something if it’s not a good read! Goodreads

FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, DIANA PETERFREUND

This is a sci-fi re-telling of Persuasion that I’ve had on my shelf for, well, like normal an embarrassingly long time. Tell me, is this one worth reading or should I sell my copy? Goodreads

PRIDE AND PREMEDIATION, TIRZAH PRICE

This is a YA novel about Lizzie and Darcy as sleuths. Goodreads

THE AUSTEN ESCAPE, DEAR MR. KNIGHTLEY and LIZZY & JANE, KATHERINE REAY

Many of Katherine’s books are inspired by classic literature, but what I like best about the ones I’ve read (which do include these three) is that they aren’t retellings of any story, but rather they are unique on their own and simply honor authors like Jane Austen through their respective stories. Goodreads

THE SECRET DIARY OF LIZZIE BENNET, BERNIE SU

I binged this video diary series that featured Elizabeth Bennet as a grad student in record time. It was so much fun, and so when a novelization came out telling the story (only instead of video format, it was a book), I had to add it to my shelf. Obviously, this one is a re-telling of Pride and Prejudice, and just writing this makes me want to rewatch all of the episodes; it’s one of those series that features short (sometimes only 3-5 minutes) episodes so it’s so easy to watch “one more.” Goodreads

GHOSTED, AMANDA QUAIN

A Northanger Abbey re-telling, this one is also pitched as having a bit of an X-Files vibe, which is a show I’ve never seen. Goodreads

ORDINARY GIRLS, BLAIR THORNBURGH

A retelling of Sense and Sensibility, when I picked this one up I thought it sounded so interesting. Alas, here we are, years after its release and still I didn’t read it. Goodreads

THE JANE AUSTEN SERIES, DEBRA WHITE SMITH

I read these years ago, and recently (in the past five years), they were republished with shiny new covers. They each tell a story inspired by an Austen novel starting with First Impressions which is Pride and Prejudice. Goodreads

a JANE AUSTEN INSPIRED NOVEL, coming soon

DASHED, AMANDA QUAIN (July 2024)

This one will be from the perspective of Margaret Dashwood (of Sense and Sensibility) and takes place during a cruise. Goodreads

    1. I’ll admit I haven’t read it, but when I read the synopsis it mentions Austen and when I researched Austen re-tellings it popped on a list or two! I’m trusting the Internet in this case which may or may not be wise. ;)

    1. I started Northanger Abbey and actually finished Sense & Sensibility. Someday I’d like to try reading hers again because I do love a good Jane Austen story. :)

  1. I have not read very many of Jane Austen’s books either. I did read Northanger Abbey, but didn’t understand it. i think I have also read Sense and Sensibility…I have several more on my shelves that I plan to try…someday, lol!

    1. I need to give her books a fair chance again, Cindy! I really like them as film or TV adaptations so it’s time I try to find out about them from the source. :)

  2. I’ve read all of Jane Austen’s novels, but haven’t read very many books based on them/re-tellings. I do enjoy film adaptations though. I love Northanger Abbey! Of course Pride and Prejudice is wonderful, and I really enjoyed Persuasion as well.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. I love so many of Austen’s stories but I suppose Pride and Prejudice is the favorite purely for its “classicness” though I do think Emma may edge it out slightly. Like you though, I’m basing this on my thoughts of the adaptations since that’s how I know these stories. :)

  3. I’m just now realizing I haven’t read a lot of Austen or Austen-inspired books. I think I’ve only read Pride and Prejudice, and few other P&P-inspired books. I’ll have to remedy this. Thanks for the list!

  4. The only Jane Austen book I’ve read is Pride and Prejudice, which was many years ago for high school. From your list, I’ve read Pride, Prejudice, and Mistletoe. It was a quick read, perfect for the busy Christmas season. I think I gave it a solid 3-stars, but I didn’t think it was as bad as others. Maybe it’s a gender-bend that threw people so off.

    1. I read P+P+M too because Hallmark adapted it. I don’t remember much, but I think I probably gave it three stars, too. Certainly a cute Christmas read as you say. :) I’ve only read Sense and Sensibility, but someday I do want to make the effort of trying to read more by Austen. :)

  5. What a great topic idea, and list! I’m always so interested in Austen books, but I haven’t actually read any. Now I have a bunch of contemporary books to check out that offer the best of Austen books without actually having to struggle through one of her books.

    1. I really want to try to read some of her novels (because I adore them as TV or film productions) but I haven’t “forced” myself to yet. Maybe 2024 will be THE year I try. ;)

    1. I’m here for all of the Austen adaptations, Caroline. Even though there’s a million of them, I still love the Austen inspired tales. Hope you found some good ones to add to that TBR! :)
