14 ENTERTAINING MOVIES SET IN SPACE (PLUS SCI-FI, TOO)
Coming up on May third is space day, one of those silly unofficial “holidays” we sometimes feature. Inspired by this, we got to thinking, what are the titles of movies set in space? Are there very many? Do any fit the parameters of movies we enjoy featuring here? There perhaps aren’t quite as many as one expects, but there are a few that fit into the neat box of styles and themes we enjoy seeing or talking about.

💫 14 ENTERTAINING MOVIES SET IN SPACE (PLUS SCI-FI, TOO) 💫 Looking at some space-y movies. Just for fun. #ChanningTatum #Dune #ChrisPratt #JenniferLawrence #Marvel #StarTrek #Zendaya Share on XSpace really isn’t my kind of genre. It’s just not something I enjoy much. But still, every once in a while when I wander outside my “space” zone of favorites, I do find something fun. Most of these probably have some type of romance, too, because let’s be real, a tiny bit of romance (or any genre we like better) can make a genre we don’t like a little more likable. Plus, to keep things more fun, these are probably all going to be fictionalized stories rather than any inspired by true events. Additionally, we’ll likely feature some sci-fi type films too that aren’t technically space, but feel a little like it.
Let’s meet the movies set in space we discovered.
MOVIES SET in SPACE
THE ADAM PROJECT
Technically this isn’t space, it’s a time travel sci-fi movie, but we’re going with it. Because why not? A Netflix flick, this one features Ryan Reynolds as a man living in the future in space who returns to earth to revisit his past self. It’s all kinds of fun! Stream with Netflix
COWBOYS AND ALIENS
Daniel Craig stars in this film that I’ll confess I did not want to watch. I think I saw it because someone lent it to my dad way back in the day, so I watched this one with him. It’s not his kind of movie either, but speaking for myself, it is fun. Stream, at publication, with Netflix
DUNE
Based on the novel of the same name, Dune boasts an impressive current “it” cast (including Rebecca Ferguson, Timothy Chalamot and Zendaya) and seems to be a movie viewers like given it now has a sequel. I started to watch it, and did try, but well, it wasn’t my thing. The cast, as previously said, seems very impressive though! Stream, at publication, with Hulu
ENDER’S GAME
This one is a little different being about “earth’s children” who are trained to fight a future space war, but it’s also one I saw years ago. I don’t think I loved the film because I don’t really have a memory, but we’re still going to put it on the list. Just because. Plus it’s based on a novel and features some recognizable names like Harrison Ford. Stream, at publication, with Netflix
FANTASTIC FOUR (2005)
Not set in space, but relating to space about four people who come home with superpowers after a mission in space goes wrong. Also before he was Captain America, Chris Evans plays a superhero in this! Stream, at publication, with Disney+
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this Chris Pratt film has three films in total, and while I only ever say its first, it is a fabulously fun time with Pratt’s Star-Lord leading a group of characters who turn out to be quite cool. Stream, at publication, with Disney+ or Starz
HOME
A family or kids movie, this one follows a girl who cares for a space creature, and the friendship they form. Stream, at publication, with Peacock

Perhaps the most appropriate title in our vision for this movies set in space list. Featuring Channing Tatum, this 2015 film is ridiculously crazy (as I remember), but it’s also a film I can sit down to watch and unplug. For the most part, I prefer that to some intellectual film that requires I overthink (though to be fair, I have seen a good number of these that are, despite their intellect, very good). Stream, at publication, with Tubi
MAN OF STEEL
He may live on earth, but Superman does come from alien space-y worlds. So while we generally know Clark Kent the human, he does hail from other worlds. Stream, at publication, with Max
PASSENGERS
This has been hailed as a really good flick with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. I started to watch it once, but never did finish watching it, but it’s something I would like to see. It’s supposed to have some twists, and a surprisingly poignant message. Stream, at publication, with Starz
SOLARIS
Oh, look! Another space movie I never saw. This one has George Clooney trying to help an isolated research crew, and since it’s got Clooney, it felt like a good film to include? Like maybe it’s popular? You guys tell me. Purchase the film on places like Apple TV
STAR TREK
Obviously, Star Trek is one of two super popular space sagas. I’m including Star Trek because it’s the one I’ve seen. Well, at least “seen” in terms the 2009 film. This remake features Chris Pine and is, much to my surprise, quite entertaining following Captain Kirk and of course, Spock, too. Stream, at publication, with Apple TV or Paramount+
WING COMMANDER
One of the Freddie Prinze Jr. flicks to not boast great review rating averages, this one might be entertaining with its video game concepts. Purchase on places like Amazon or Youtube
ZATHURA
Never watched this one, but it features a young Kristen Stewart alongside Josh Hutcherson pre The Hunger Games fame. They, along with Jonah Bobo, play siblings who’s game sends them to unexpected places. Stream, at publication, with Tubi
