IF YOU LIKE ‘ARGYLLE,’ TRY THESE MOVIES
One of the popular movies of 2024 is Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. The popularity isn’t all positive, but for a film, popularity is still popularity, right? From the rumors that Taylor Swift ghost wrote the rumored novel on which this is based to the critical annoyance from critics, the film sure made headlines. Finally I saw the film and thought I’d share movies to watch if you like Argylle, an action and adventure flick that is quite fun.

Elly Conway is a Denver author who pens the very fictional Argylle’s adventures. When real life and fiction starts to blend, Elly’s entire world and perspective shifts. With only Alfie, her beloved cat, as her ally (or is he?), Elly must navigate this frightening new world.
Silly and outlandish in the early part of the first act and latter second act, Argylle is still a really good time and extremely entertaining. It’s not just a nod to various other spy movies or TV we love, but it has some colorful action sequences, too. So much so, it makes me wonder, what other titles would fit as watchalikes for this spy flick. Some that I found are even sillier than this film, and some are a bit more serious, but either way, these feel like a good fit.

THE 355
This is a film all about female spies and as I remember, it’s a bit of a mess. But maybe that’s just me. Stream on Starz, at publication
CHARLIE’S ANGELS
The films from the 2000s are ridiculous, and while they aren’t nearly as well done or entertaining as Argylle, they do have that kind of ability to make fun of themselves, which I appreciate. Purchase on places on Amazon
HER ALIBI
A film with Tom Selleck, this isn’t one I’ve seen. But it seems like it’d be a fun time about two people who are thrown together when a woman needs an alibi for murder. Plus, Selleck plays an author, same as Bryce Dallas Howard’s Elly! Purchase on places like Amazon
GET SMART
Based on a show, Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell lead an entertaining cast about a clumsy spy. Stream on Max, at publication
KILLERS
Follows a married couple, Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher, who discover that secrets are holding together their marriage. Stream on Peacock, at publication
KINGSMAN (FILM SERIES)
I haven’t seen this R-rated trilogy (for language and extreme violence from what I understand), but if you like Matthew Vaughn, I suspect you’d see more of his stylings in these films, which he made prior to Argylle. Purchase on places like Amazon or Apple
KNIGHT & DAY
More comedic than serious, this spy flick features Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz together and really is, quite humorous so long as you don’t “need” something intellectual. Stream on Hulu or Tubi, at publication
THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Henry Cavill stars in this one too and is a remake of the popular 60s eras TV show. Purchase on places like Amazon

These are probably an obvious choice, but for the most part, even with the repeat themes or story ideas, the Mission: Impossible films which Tom Cruise was made famous from, are still entertaining. Stream on Paramount+, at publication
MR. & MRS. SMITH
Another obvious choice, but one has to admit that the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie flick is entertaining. Stream on Netflix, at publication
MY SPY
An Amazon original, this one is darling. It follows a tough spy who will, perhaps, be outwitted by a young girl. Stream on Prime, at publication
SALT
Angelina Jolie stars in this film about a woman who works at the CIA but may not be trustworthy… or is she? Stream on Hulu, at publication
THIS MEANS WAR
Chris Pine pairs with Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy in this action comedy. It follows spy and an ordinary citizen and while ridiculous, yes, it’s good fun. Purchase on places like Amazon
TO CATCH A SPY
This one along with My Spy is cuter than anything else on this list because it’s a Hallmark film. Colin O’Donnell from Arrow features as the lead in this one.
TRUE LIES
This is considered a kind of classic and even spun off a short lived TV series from 2022. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a spy who discovers his wife may be having an affair. Stream on Hulu, at publication
