SOME GOOD PERIOD DRAMAS ON AMAZON PRIME, PART 2
Back over a year ago now I shared some of the best Amazon Prime period drama. For this little space, it’s a popular list to view and so I thought I’d follow it up with another Amazon Prime Period Drama, Part 2 list. This time looking (mostly) at anything that’s been added in that time though I cannot promise no overlap since sometimes good period dramas need all of the repeat mentions.
TV NEWS | ‘SANDITON’ RETURNS TO MASTERPIECE PBS: WHY I MIGHT NOT LIKE IT
I have this feeling that when I go to do my research of what’s included with Prime, there won’t be many new titles to discover. However since this is just guess work on my part, I do actually have to go in and do the work to find out if there is much new or not. As is custom here, I will add that this list is not inclusive of every period drama you can find on Prime. You can look through our “part one” collection as many of those are still on Prime, and this list will try to include new options as well.
Some you might not see on here either because I know nothing about the title or it doesn’t fit with my usual content or maybe the film just isn’t that good. All are possible reasons why you don’t see them on a list here. Or I may not have seen the title either.
Despite this, I have hopes I’ll find some decent possibilities! Let’s find out.
PERIOD DRAMAS ON AMAZON PRIME, PART 2
At time of publication, these are all available on Amazon Prime
1: THE AGE OF ADALINE
Unique, but also very good, I love this drama with Blake Lively. Perhaps we cannot really categorize it as a “period drama” since the majority of its setting is modern times, but our heroine dresses vintage, and everything about it is like a dreamy period film, so I’m bending rules to include The Age of Adaline. (PG-13)
2: ANZAC GIRLS
A really good, but underrated (and now also ended) period drama about Australian nurses during WWI. If you’re not into more grim period drama, this one is best left alone. But if you don’t mind more realistic or grim story-telling, it’s got a great cast and had lots of story left to tell. (TV-14) period dramas on amazon prime part 2
3: THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE
This series is ALL kinds of good! Especially if you love solid mystery. Tells the story of four women who band together after their days breaking code in WWII to solve mysteries. (TV-14)
4: THE DUCHESS
Kiera Knightley stars in this bittersweet period drama about a woman trapped in a loveless marriage.(PG-13)
5: FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
Featuring an all star cast and inspired by a true story, Meryl Streep plays a women determined to become an opera singer. Only trouble is, she hasn’t the voice for it. Hugh Grant co-stars.
6: FROM TIME TO TIME
It’s been a minute since I watched this one, but I do remember thinking it lovely. Needless to say I should re-watch it at some point. Oh, and Hugh Bonneville stars, too!
7: GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
Colin Firth stars with Scarlett Johansson (long before Marvel!) in this historical adaptation about a painter. (PG-13)
8: THE ILLUSIONIST
This is a mesmerizing, intricate and mysterious period drama that’s all about atmosphere! Edward Norton plays a magician who, after being torn apart from his childhood sweetheart, reunites with her many years later. (PG-13)
9: LADY JANE
A young Helena Bonham Carter stars in this film about the young woman who was queen of England for a mere 9 days! It’s a sad drama, but if you like anything that relates to the Tudor dynasty, you may enjoy this 80s drama. (PG-13)
10: THE LADY VANISHES
Loved this fun mystery so much. Tuppence Middleton stars as a woman travelling on a train who tries to solve a mystery. Only, one thing to note, the end isn’t totally satisfying. (TV-14) period dramas on amazon prime part 2
11: LEATHERHEADS
A 1930s period drama about football with George Clooney! (PG-13)
12: LOVE & FRIENDSHIP
Based on Austen’s Lady Susan novella, just don’t expect normal Austen storytelling. (PG-13)
13: MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT
One of the Woody Allen films, it’s also one I never did see. I’ve watched 2 or 3 of Allen’s films and they’re just not my cup of tea. However, this one follows a con woman (Emma Stone) as she tries to make it in the 1930s – and it features Colin Firth, too! (PG-13)
14: MERCY STREET (PBS), SEASON ONE
Like Anzac Girls, this is another more grim period drama (following the lives of doctors and nurses as they treat wounded men during the Civil war), however I do like that it’s more of a “bonnet” costume series rather than Victorian or other era. Also, it has one of my favorite romances in period TV. Just wish we’d gotten a third season to see how it would end. (TV-14)

Adding this on as a repeat because as I say from last year, it IS sweet. Normally I’m not into ghost type stories, but this period drama is sweet and charming, and takes more of a romantic approach to its storytelling. period drama on amazon prime part 2
16: MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB
I read a review from someone recently who didn’t much care for this Australian film, but at the time I watched it, I remember really enjoying it. It’s kind of one of those that starts off a bit rough but ends up being a really atmospheric and good mystery. (TV-14, some nudity)
17: THE MUSKETEERS (BBC)
If you want something fun (and a little campy), this BBC adventure series is for you! (TV-14)
18: THE PARADISE (BBC)
Another one of those BBC series that ends too soon. This charming story is about an ambitious girl who tries to make a life for herself by working in a department store. Of course, there’s also plenty of romance, too! (TV-PG)
19: POLDARK (BBC)
One of the more famous (recent) period dramas, this one definitely gets a little “too” soapy, but it IS beautiful and someday, I’ll finish watching its drama! (TV-14)
20: THE RAILWAY CHILDREN
Saw this one years ago (like so many of these) and remember it being charming. It follows siblings traveling on an orphan train. (PG)
21: RUNNING FOR GRACE
This is one I haven’t watched, but it keeps coming up in my Prime searches. Looks like it might be a solid drama. (PG-13)
22: SENSE & SENSIBILITY (1995)
I’m not a fan of this version despite loving it as a teen (I “grew up” with this version). My heart has been stolen by the PBS Masterpiece miniseries which fortunately is also on Prime. That said, I know many people adore this adaptation and so I wanted to include it. (PG) period dramas on amazon prime part 2
23: THE WINSLOW BOY
As I remember this one, it’s rather slow moving about a barrister hired to defend the son of a wealthy family. A young Jeremy Northam features in this one. (G) Amazon
24: VICTORIA (ITV)
Based on the life of Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, this ITV miniseries chronicles their struggles and triumphs. (TV-14)

You consider The Moonstone to be a ghost story? Why? I’m so curious.
It’s been WAY too long since I’ve seen it, honestly. Since I copied that from my first list (just because The Moonstone is still on Prime), I cannot say the “why.” I’d guess I mean more in atmosphere rather than actual, and I just didn’t make the distinction. :)
