TEN BOOKS I BOUGHT BECAUSE OF THE HYPE (AND SOME I NEVR READ)
Technically our list today is meant to be about books we read (even if first we avoided them) because of hype. Since I probably haven’t read many that fit this, I instead have to share ten books I bought because of the hype… but haven’t read. (But actually as I browsed the books I’ve reviewed, there are some I did read.) We can all pretend there is anything surprising here now. As this is our topic, we’re going to share the books we bought because of hype, but didn’t ever read.
LIST | SOME OF THE BEST AND FAVORITE SPIES FROM FILM AND TV
TEN BOOKS I BOUGHT BECAUSE OF THE HYPE (AND SOME I NEVR READ). Sharing a few books I bought, read (and some I didn't read) because of hype. #TopTenTuesday #BookList #Books #TopTenList Share on XI’m actually kind of curious about what will end up on this list because I don’t even know how many of these books I still have since I’ve sold some and donated a bunch of books. Let’s see what we find even with this.
THE HYPE BOOK BOUGHT
ZENITH, SASHA ALSBERG and LINDSAY CUMMINGS
Once upon a time I watched booktube, and Sasha’s channel (was it A Book Utopia?) was one of them. As a result, I bought this book quite excitedly (despite it being not my genre) and still haven’t read it. Question is, is it worth it? Goodreads
SIX OF CROWS, LEIGH BARDUGO
I was genuinely interested in this one over and beyond the hype because I think it sounds fun (I love the sound of the team and the heist-esque premise). But since I’ve had it for years and never read it, I’m thinking it’s time to unhaul. In fact, I may have in my last reorganization. Goodreads
THE SELECTION, KIERA CASS
Popular and hyped, this one is a fun and entertaining read in a kind of dystopian read meets The Bachelor. Goodreads
BEACH READ, EMILY HENRY
Unlike most on this list, I did actually read this one. Sadly, it wasn’t a “me” book. I would be willing to try another of Emily’s since I do try to give an author a second read chance, but I don’t know that I will. Goodreads
THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY, NATALIE JENNER
This book is super loved especially by those who enjoy Jane Austen-esque stories, but it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. Though I’m in the reader minority I know. Goodreads
THE UNHONEYMOOONERS, CHRISTINA LAUREN
I’m not sure that this particular novel is one of Lauren’s (who is actually a writing duo) most popular or hyped, but the author is and so I picked this one up. Like Henry’s, it simply isn’t a “me” book, and I even tried another of Christina Lauren’s (something about a ‘honey list’ I think) and felt the same. The concepts always sound fun, but I haven’t tried more by them. Goodreads
THRONE OF GLASS, SARAH J. MAAS
I owned several of these and may three months ago I finally listed them for sale. Surprisingly, they did sell (I feel like some books are so saturated in the market everyone who wants it, has it). Now I just hope the person they’re with is able to enjoy them since that’s what books are meant for. Goodreads
THE DO-OVER, LYNN PAINTER
Lynn’s books were showing up everywhere (likely on various of your lists!), so I had to give one a chance. This one was sweet and fun but Better Than the Movies is the one most hyped. Goodreads
THE MAID, NITA PROSE
This one got lots of buzz at its publication, and while I did enjoy the book and will read book two, it wasn’t quite the book I had in mind either. Goodreads
AGAIN, BUT BETTER, CHRISTINE RICCIO
Same as with Sasha’s, I bought this because of booktube and Christine’s channel. Goodreads

Linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl October 1: Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype (and did you make the right choice?)
I remember when the reviews for The Maid started coming out, thinking I must have read a completely different book. While I found it okay, it’s not a series I’ll continue with. But it seems like everyone else thought it was a 4—or 5-star book. I’m glad to know I’m not alone.

I liked The Maid but didn’t LOVE it like everyone else. Sad since I did expect to but oh, well! I’m glad it did find an audience. :)
I really don’t buy because or avoid because of the hype. I typically stick with my favorite authors and that’s it.
I’ve heard of a few of these on your list but haven’t read any.
I think, OVERALL this is what I do. More so now than perhaps I used to which was the phase I was in when I bought books like Sarah J. Maas. If I do buy hyped books now, it’s mostly because it DOES sound like one I’d enjoy. :)
That’s good to know about The Maid.
Thanks for visiting… as always, Lydia! :)
I did a similar twist to this weeks topic (although it’s just books I bought because of the hype as I literally just bought seven of them yesterday when I found them at the thrift store). I hope you have a great week.
Sometimes a large book haul is fun, right? I have got lots of books in the mail recently and am remembering it’s as the result of preorders. Guess I went a little preorder buy happy. ;)
I have heard of all of these, but I have not read any of them. I don’t normally get behind hyped books, or buy them because they are hyped. Every once in a while I do get sucked in though, LOL! Have a great week!
I used to get pulled in A LOT. But I think now I know what I like vs. don’t as much and the “pull” of a hyped book doesn’t appeal to me in the same way it did. Of course there are still hyped books every now and then that make me buy them, but it’s more because it does sound good. :)
Same! I have tried and true authors ;) they get all my hype!
I love my favorite authors! :)
I was not impressed with The Jane Austen Society. The characters lacked depth and way too much profanity.
I don’t remember much about the specifics of “why” I didn’t love TJAS, but I do remember being super disappointed because a: it was Austen and b: everyone and their bestie loved it. ;)
I’ve wanted to read The Jane Austen Society forever, but it’s one of those books I always put off., at least I would like to see the movie
I hope you enjoy The Jane Austen Society when you read it! And I know the feeling. There’s lots of books I would like to read, but I just don’t make the time. ;)
I’ve read Six of Crows and really enjoyed it. I hope you like it if you didn’t already get rid of it. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Thanks! I hear SO much good about Six of Crows, it’s just that I’ve had it for so long at this point I wonder if I should even give it a chance. It certainly sounds like a fun read. :)
I had a hard time with this topic, too, because I mostly avoid overhyped books (although there are a few I can think of that I bought because of hype and haven’t read yet). THE UNHONEYMOONERS isn’t my kind of read either, but I actually really enjoyed it. THE MAID is exactly my kind of read and I loved it, not surprisingly. I read one Emily Henry book and, yeah, I don’t think she’s for me either.
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

I used to buy hyped books a lot! I think it was because I assumed I’d love them too. I’ve since learned that’s not always the case and that’s ok. I do normally like cute rom-com type reads but so far I haven’t loved any Christina Lauren book. I had a love/hate relationship with Beach Read, and as a result I haven’t tried more of her novel. Still trying to decide if I will or not! Glad I’m not along though. :)
Ah I do kind of miss the booktube days :) I also read Zenith and Again but Better, but they were not really for me either.
I didn’t read either one of those booktube sensations and at this point I feel like I’ll unhaul both. Zenith really isn’t my genre, and I think I’ve read some so-so reviews for Again but Better that make me think perhaps it wouldn’t be for me. Time will tell if I do read it I guess. :)
I loved Six of Crows when it came out and my initial reaction was to try to change your mind about unhauling it, but enough time has passed that I don’t remember much about it and I guess it’s valid that it might not be the book for you. Life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy, so carpe diem!
I don’t mind being convinced differently about a book I’m thinking about unhauling. ;) I think it’s more the aspect of I’ve had it for years and didn’t take time to read it, so is it still something I’d like? Without reading it I suppose the reader never knows for sure.
