SEVEN REASONS TO WATCH ‘IT HAD TO BE YOU’ AS IT CELEBRATES 25 YEARS!
There is nothing quite like a film anniversary to make one feel old. Especially if it’s a film that you considered part of your “childhood.” One of the films I watched as a young viewer is It Had to Be You. A film from 2000, the romance dramedy is perhaps an underrated gem since it’s not something I see people mention or talk often about. However, since it has a special day coming up, let’s remember It Had to Be You 25 years later.

SEVEN REASONS TO WATCH ‘IT HAD TO BE YOU’ AS IT CELEBRATES 25 YEARS! Celebrating It Had to Be You as 2025 marks its twenty-fifth anniversary! #RomCom #RomComs #Romance #RomanceMovies #MovieAnniversary Share on XThe film made its debut on February 11th and while it may not have had the star power of famous stars also releasing rom-coms from this period, it’s still a charming film that likely still manages to inspire some viewers to rage tweet about it. The reason for this is its plot which follows two people who, while planning their respective weddings, meet unexpectedly and begin to question if they’re with the right person. This brings us to some of the reasons we love It Had to Be You 25 years later, which is our effort to remind you why you may want to rediscover this one.
IT HAD to be YOU 25 YEARS LATER
THE CHOICE
Saying too much isn’t in the cards because we don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t seen this, or you simply want to rediscover the film without spoilers. However, the choices these characters make are admirable and they are characters with principles. Something we don’t often see in film today.
THE HEROES
I like the guys in this. I’m assuming there are many from the generation after me (and likely in mine too) who would detest both leading men, but I like them. Do they make mistakes? Yes. But they have respect and admiration and understanding.
THE HEROINES
The heroines are quite smart in this film. I like that the scripts from this time frame, at least based on what I’m observing as I re-watch romantic comedies from this era, have the woman stand up for themselves or what’s right, but do so without diminishing other people. It’s lovely and proves that stories can do this and do it well.
THE MISTAKES
The heroes and heroines make mistakes in this story. However, I think that while the story allows us to see these mistakes it also gives the characters (and us) a way to work through some of the choices that aren’t helping or benefiting their life.

THE second LOVE STORY
The secondary love story is really sweet and memorable though far less important than I remembered from my many other viewings.
THE second REUNION
I love the scene that reunites the secondary couple. It’s awkward in places, yes, but this also makes it relatable and seems real by comparison.
THE TIMELINE
If you don’t like romantic movies taking place over a week or two or even a month, then this one gives us more. Its primary timeline is just a weekend, but the ultimate choices and romance are defined by much longer than this (and defined by characters moving on and living), which is wise and quite smart.
