‘BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY’ IS A FINAL CHAPTER

Returning to her iconic role, Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy is promoted as a kind of “final chapter” in the journey of this fan favorite character.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025) Film Review

The thing no one plans for is the reality Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is living. Nearly 50, and a mom trying to raise her kids alone, she’s not really sure what comes next. The apps aren’t her thing, and she feels lost, so she focuses on her kids. Then she picks up her diary again and inspiration to live again strikes. Shortly after, she meets her son’s teacher, Scott (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a man with whom she has a few disagreements. As if this weren’t unexpected enough, what’s worse is meeting Roxby (Leo Woodall), and she feels a connection she hasn’t had in a long time… not since the love of her life died. Leo is cool and smart and good looking, and he’s years younger than Bridget.

Also in this mix is Bridget’s ex (boss and lover) Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). This time he’s there as a friend, which Bridget finds welcome and comforting. Now she has decisions to make as she navigates this crazy modern world and tries to understand what love looks like in this new decade of finding connection.

The fourth film in a series of movies that are inspired by the novels about the same characters. This is a favorite role for the leading lady, but are also well-known roles for the men. Believe it or not, I haven’t seen these films before, but since it is a favorite franchise, skipping over a review featuring this new film did seem like a possible skip. I did watch Bridget Jones’s Diary this past week and find, based off what I read about the films in-between, they aren’t films I’ll rush to see (convince me in the comments if I’m wrong!). So here we are with thoughts and curiosity about the world of Bridget Jones, a character everyone (but me) has loved.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is a cute film. It’s, I am sure, a more mature (emotionally) dramedy than its prior installments, which is wise and fitting because it fits the timeline and place where the leading character is at. The cast is good and I enjoy the characters. The film also picks up one of the most popular tropes in storytelling just now. The way this works is actually more organic than some of the other films I see using the age-gap. Just know, this is only a small part of the film.

This film is, for me, heartwarming and sweet. It grieves, which is thoughtful and well done, but also has so much joy. I enjoyed it more than I think I would other movies in the franchise. It’s lovely and has depth, plus the mix of returning and new characters is a nice balance. While I don’t know either way, this very much does feel like a final chapter and it suits the story as being one. The film, while sad, too, has a likable story and is easy to watch.

Content: this film has multiple uses of the f-word which is the primary reason for its R-rating. A couple heavily makes out and starts to undress each other before the scene takes a pause. They again pick up where they leave off; we see them “after” lying in bed.
